The Ocean going rescue tug, HMT Rollcall W81 1920, Built using Caldercraft's Resolve grp hull and plans (much modified).

There is nothing like a bit of retail therapy to cheer you up. So I splashed out on a new milling machine from Proxxon, more a combination of bits that go together to make a more substantial unit than my MF70. The MF70 is quite good but limited by size. The major components of the new setup are a BFB 2000 drill stand, a KT150 compound table , and a bfw 40/E mill/drill head. Too early to say how good it will turn out but very promising so far.
Back to Rollcall and a good bit of progress. The lifeboats and davits are all rigged and the flying bridge attached and the supports added, yet to be painted. Next up is to rig the fore mast.

A very nice Proxxon buy: I have the same set-up.:) And again a nice detailing paint-job, Jack.

Hi Peter, very pleased with the Proxxon, particularly like the motor, feels powerful and under stressed, would have liked a 6.4 mm collet rather than the max. 6.0 mm, as I have a lot of 1/4 inch bits. But that will be easy fixed. The motor is quieter than a Carmelite nun at breakfast.

Cheers JJ..

A bit of a milestone I have finished and added the fore mast along with a start on the rigging, this no doubt will be great fun. I don't know much yet about tug signal lamps but this girl has more lights than my Christmas tree. The lamps are two piece white metal and I struggled to know what colour to paint them. In the end I whent for black with a whitish gloss wash to try and imitate glass. Just about OK.
As can be seen I have started the ratlines, in the background of some of the pics. is my build of Vangard Models HMS Alert, from some years ago, that is up to be cleaned. I look at her and wonder how I ever managed to do the rigging, now impossible with only one fully functioning arm. This wee bit on Rollcall has totally debunked the idea of one last fully rigged ship, pity.

Some pics.

A bit more completed. Now the front one third is all but finished. I made a balls of the ratlines, so the shrouds where cut off and replaced with finer ones, the same for the ratlines. The steam winch looks quite nice and not much changed from the kit. To finish the mid section I needed to add the two compionways up to the flying bridge. A second faux pas; I should have drilled holes for the top rail, so know I cannot use the kit white metal parts,(which where not too bad), so I have started making a pair from sstyrene and brass for the rails.

Some pics. in particulary the wrong order,(football is on soon).

So much to see with so many details…. Once again, nice additions, Jack.

Good afternoon.
Things have been going along steady with no real problems, although I should have fitted the companion ladders up to the flying bridge sooner as the where a bit of a squeeze but went in ok in the end. The main mast supports a substansual derrick with the boom streatching well down over the engin room. It sports a large travelling block and hook. There was quite a lot of rigging to be done and the ratlines are a real trial for me now but again they look alright. After seeing the cost I thought I would have a go at making a bow fender. The one in the pic. won't make the cut but it shows promise.
Next up will be the towing rails and I will have a think about how to make them. I have experimented with some 3.5mm styrene 'T' section but it is hard to shape without twisting, so I am thinking about some sort of jig.
Talking of experiments I roughed out a 12 inch gun barrel in 1/96 scale with a thought of turning four of them for my next project. But it looks a non-runner as they are too long and thin for my lathe. A support might help but the long taper is near 100mm and has to be cut in three sections, repetition would be dificult.

Some pics.
