USS Constitution from Scientific Models

All is not lost with your sky sails. According to Olof A. Eriksen's book: Constitution All Sails Up and Flying, his diagram of the 1817 Basic Sail Plan, shows the sky sails just the way you made them. This book is all about the rigging of the USSS Constitution sails.

Hope this helps

Jon

I was going for the earliest version, but that ship has sailed.

There are a lot of inaccuracies in this model, but one of the most glaring is the type of skysail it portrays. They are square sails on the model. I purchased Anatomy of the Ship: USS Constitution, and it shows a triangular skysail. (Sigh). Not going back and redoing it. View attachment 523223View attachment 523224
Good evening Vic. We never stop learning. I did not know those triangle shaped sky sail were ever used on ships from the Constitution's era. Now I do ROTF.Anyone looking at your ship will be non the wiser… well mostly :D . Cheers Grant

You guessed it, Paul! Next year I’m dropping an Old Testament Survey class and adding sophomore English. Still teaching Revelation to seniors. I’ll also be taking some graduate classes in English, focusing on linguistics.
My classes have focused a bit more on cultural engagement this past year. Not quite apologetics, but in that vein. I'm also developing a new curriculum for a discipleship class we will offer in the fall. Fun...but a lot of work too. I love how you've stayed in your area of giftedness even after your administrative career came to a close.

It’s a way I can serve my church, along with being a deacon and a choir member. It’s been a blessing. I do devotions with the Admiral at 8:00, research for class and fun at 8:30, go in to work at 11:00, and get off at 2:00 to go to the gym. Some days I get to work on my ship for an hour in the evenings. Mostly, I try to figure out where to tie off all those pesky lines when I’m working on the ship! God’s blessings to you, Paul!
Vic

Your model is looking exceptional! The sail plans in the "Anatomy" reflect different eras in her career. She had very many re-fits. Some only months apart.

Thanks, Peter! I wish I could have done all the ties and halyards and sheets and bowlines, but…. I think I’m happy with what I’ve got. I’ve about run out of places to tie things down.
