USS Constitution - Model Shipways

I am working on the belaying pin racks and to my unpleasant surprise, there is not enough belaying pins in the kit. So, I wanted to order some from Model Expo.
Shipping is 36 dollars.
I am not sure what to do next. Maybe I'll send a message to Model Expo to see what can be done. I only need another 30 not 150...

i have come across this before not enough belaying pins, try only using pins that are actually used for rigging, and leave the other pin rack holes empty. i have the same kit. not what i expected, more like a box of lumber than a kit. way too much scratch building for the price of this kit. also the bow decoration and name plate is a joke too, should have at least been cast in metal or something 3D .

oops,,sorry i was refering to the uss constitution kit

I don't mind the scratch build aspect but I do mind that the belaying pin issue exists. I have so far had to request about 4 different parts because they were either missing from the kit or did not have enough of them. That is a sore point for me. I suspect that I will need to get more thread too because I don;t think there is enough to rig the entire ship

Hi Jack, try Great Hobbies (greathobbies.ca) they carry a range of belaying pins from various vendors including Model Expo. Their brass 8mm pins show at $9.99 for 20 if you need smaller quantities. They have the larger packs too.

Since belaying pins are typically grossly oversized and out of scale, these are my favorite belaying pins. They are properly shaped, tiny, and most importantly, strong. At the moment, Dry-dock Models and Parts is out of stock. If you brown them properly with brass browning solution, they appear line wood. In the part, I have use the best wood belaying pins ever made, the ones from Falkonet in Russia, but these are no longer available in the USA. The same problem of parts being out of scale exixts with rigging blocks, particularly those used in gun tackles, and the smallest single and double blocks obtainable were 1.5mm blocks, also found every so many months or so at Dry-dock Models and Parts. I really appreciate well-made parts! :D Thumbsup

nice looking belaying pins. Brass things always look nice.

Later in the sailing ship era iron and later steel belaying pins were used. The builders drawings for my present project, the 1909 era Great Lakes steamship Benjamin Noble specifies steel belaying pins for her cargo handling gear.

Bright brass belaying pins; No!

I've actually ordered wood and parts from them and they will send it to you for free. I know when you order any parts you have to give them a specific number. What sound like 1 pkg is actually one. I did this when my deck was short wood and they sent me only one piece of wood. I didnt know if I was angry or thought it was the funniest thing. Then I reordered 50 strips and I got 50 strips, lol. I've done this a few times and they're actually pretty good about it. They are aware that this specific wooden model has some deficits in its supplied wood. I also agree that I'm surprised that I've had to fabricate a lot of parts, but I guess it makes it a true wooden ship when you build pretty much everything by hand.

Yes I agree. They are really good at customer service requests.

I bought new rope because I think what comes with the kit is substandard and frays too easily. There is a website called Ropes or Scale...I know, how ironic, lol. But way better quality and you can pick what ever length you need. I always got each of them one size thicker than the kit because the tiniest one that comes with it is pure garbage. At least the new thread looks like actual rope.

There are several sites that sell rope. I have tried Ropes of scale, Syren ship models and dry dock models and parts. All 3 were clearly superior to ropes provided by the kits I have tried so far. The same thing goes with blocks.

The only hickup is the price. It goes up rather quickly. I do have a contraption for making ropes using a planetary gear but I haven't figured out how to use it properly... Very frustrating

After seeing how nice Ropes of Scale ropes look on my model, I think it's well woth the price if you are doing a couple models. If you do more, learning out to make your own ropes becomes practical and saves money, but the there is a time investment to learn how, and a rope walk that performs well can be very costly.

The sites do occasionally have sales, keep an eye out.

There are many threads on making rope on this site and model ship world. There are also many you tube videos. There are also you tube videos for making rope walks. One even used legos.

Here is a current thread that also mentions older ones.
