This is way off course for me to venture into as my knowledge on these types of ships is very limited to nearly zero ! However, at some point, there is something about this that I am willing to try. My research has only taken me to the point of finding Photo Etched Kits (PE Kits) for this Nimitz by White Ensign.

However, sadly to say, I have to admit, that I do not know what to do with it. What I mean is that the PE kit (full version that has everything) as such:
WEM 1/350 USS Nimitz - The Ultimate Set (PE 35039)

This particular PE add-on or upgrade says that it is for outfitting the Nimitz for later use and not for earlier model. I can only assume that the PE kit would have installation instructions on where to glue the parts. Also, since it seems obvious that the parts are brass (metal), are these parts to be painted ? I know, dumb question ---the real carrier does not have such golden brass ornamentation on it.

I think it also comes with an aircraft assortment in the WEM PE as well. I have done limited research and have seen people really modifying the heck and I have to admit, I would not even know where to begin to know what needs modification or not.

I would hate to buy and build this thing only to make a mess of it. The model is almost 40" long and has enough area to work with and have a little fun with details.

Is there anyone willing to offer any advice or where I can find such a model being built ?

Thanks

Thanks Zoltan. What this person is doing w wood is way far beyond my abilities right now. However, it does provide for good references. This person obviously knows the ship well.

Thanks guys for the generous info. I found out more info on my own.

  1. Gold Medal Models ( http://www.goldmm.com/ ) seems to say they have the best PE kit.
  2. The part nos are: 350-28 Nimitz, 350-29 Extra Details, 350-30 Air Wing Details.
  3. The "Hangar" Details for the Trumpeter is not included and needs after market fitment. Therefore I found all 3 hangars from a 3D printing company: https://www.shapeways.com/designer/gjholmes77. Below are some images of the 3 hangars that he offers.

Why is this important? because when I light the Hangars, some of the aircraft will be visible like the real thing instead of just an "empty room" with bare walls.
I do not want to mention price here.
So, now with the P.E. kit selected and if these hangars work out - then I should be starting with a good outcome.

I did find out that the AIR WING group (air-craft included in kit) is correct for this kit as well.
Air Wing was Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, tail code "AJ," made up of the following squadrons:

VF-41 "Black Aces" and VF-84 "Jolly Rogers," equipped with F-14A Tomcats.
VA-82 "Marauders" and VA-86 "Sidewinders," with A-7E Corsair IIs.
VA-35 "Black Panthers," with A-6E and KA-6D Intruders.
VAW-124 "Bear Aces," with E-2C Hawkeyes.
VAQ-138 "Yellow Jackets," with EA-6B Prowlers.
HS-9 "Sea Griffins," with SH-3H Sea Kings.
VS-24 "Scouts," with S-3A Vikings.
VQ-2 Det. "Batmen," with EA-3B Skywarriors

The only other part is the lighting for the rest of the project such as the flight deck lighting and control tower lighting.

I forgot that I am now investigating Fiber Optics for lighting this time.
