VASA 1628 (De Agostini)

Hello everyone,

The anchors with the anchor buoys have been attached.

The flags were raised. The quality is not great, But what the heck

And finally, the rear lantern was fitted.

So that's it, there will be no continuation.

After about 3 years of building, after a lot of swearing, rebuilding and a patient wife, the model is finished.
I would like to thank everyone who supported me with criticism, advice and encouragement to realise this model from a subscription kit.
Thanks again, thanks, thanks.

Special thanks go to Fred Hocker, who gave me the courage and perseverance to complete the model.

I don't know at the moment whether I'll take any more pictures for the gallery.
I'll probably start by organising a nice display case.

Greetings
Rüdiger

Congratulations on a stunning build!
Your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and dedication really shine through in every part of the model. It's a joy to see such fine work come together, a project well worth celebrating. Bravo on a job exceptionally done!

Hello everyone,

I need to get back to you and write down some thoughts on this model.

I purchased the subscription model because there wasn't a complete kit available at the time. I was simply fascinated by the possibility of painting 426 figures and attaching them to the hull. Moreover, after my visit to Stockholm, the Vasa was always a model I wanted to build.

I waited until all deliveries arrived. However, the euphoria after the first deliveries quickly faded when I realized there was no complete plan for the model. Furthermore, the material, especially the strips, weren't exactly the best. So I decided to use pearwood strips for the hull. I don't like painted hulls or ship models. I then obtained documentation from Mondfeld, Langström, and others. The differences between the Mondfeld plan and the kit dimensions, or vice versa, were quite significant, and I had to modify a lot to accommodate the 1:65 scale, which was probably more like 1:67. For example, the De Agostini kit lacked the Hackboard in the stern, but provided more stairs on deck. The cannons were not fully assembled, and the gun ports on the rear deck were also completely missing. But that wasn't a problem, since I wanted to modify the hull anyway, and the number of cannons didn't bother me. The placement of the side galleries was incorrect in the kit. According to the kit, the rudder is also incorrectly attached. The sails were not suitable and were too small for the scale. Since I can't sew sails myself, I reluctantly used the ones from the kit. The rigging in the kit is very simplified, and I based it on the models in the Vasa Museum and various forums, as well as the plans of some model-making colleagues. Bear with me if it's not quite rigged. The blocks were lasered from plywood and some of them are crumbling. I then got some from Dry Dock Models in Canada, which cost a lot of shipping and customs (why isn't something like this available in Europe at this quality). The mast platforms were all not true to the original and had to be modified or remade. I rebuilt the gratings and the windlass because I didn't like the dimensions.

Despite everything, I enjoyed building the model after several motivational breaks, and I didn't manage to build everything the way I imagined. What's the point?

Would I build a model from a subscription again? I don't know. What I wouldn't build again is a model without plans from which I could take measurements. That's pure "model building torture."

I hope I was able to convey my thoughts on this, even though I didn't list everything that bothered me.

My conclusion is:

For me personally, despite a few errors, it turned out to be a very nice model.

I hope I translated everything correctly. Otherwise, sorry for my bad English.

Best regards,
Rüdiger

Hello everyone,

is it possible to obtain a frame plan of the Vasa's dinghy? I can find plans in my documents but no waterline drawings.
Many thanks for your efforts in advance.

I have them (somewhere ???), but I don't know if Fred wants them publicly posted. He sent them to me so I'm confident he would be fine with me sending them to you. Please PM me your email address.
