I always thought that this term referred to the fabulous and exotic scratch tree (Arbus Bodgerensis) cultivated only on the mountain tops of Madagascar. The seeds in its large fruits were said to resemble the frames of galleons, its dried flowers ship's figureheads, and whose leaves contain fine fibrous threads exactly like miniature cables. As an added bonus the pulp of the fruits made marvellous glue that nobody is allergic to.
Unfortunately this tree no longer exists, having been logged to the point of total extinction in order to supply the model shipwrights of the 18th century.
