ZHL San Felipe 1690 - Ted R

Hope your health improves and you can get back home soon? There's a lot to be said for comforting familiarity.

Your San Felipe has been a catalogue of rotten luck and problematic design from the start... but your build log here has inspired me to have a go at this one myself.

Can I recommend a much more therapeutic build... something from Vanguard models (via agesofsail in the US.) These kits are far better designed and have proper instructions! You'll spend more time building a model you can be proud of- and less time screaming in frustration.

So sorry to hear about the San Felipe, Ted, but even more concerned about your health! I hope your issues leading you to the ER have been resolved. I agree that perhaps a less ambitious project might be in order while you're staying in a rehab unit. Best wishes to you - I hope everything turns out well!
Thanks Russ, I'm cruising the member site here looking for a deal.

Two more trips to the emergency room and still in the hospital again. Things aren't looking good for the old San Felipe.
Previous nursing home dropped in on its bow when packing my stuff. They were angry the VA system pulled me out of their and opened an investigation on the facility. They broke off and lost the four forward frames where they protrude above the upper deck to provide backing to build the bulkwarks. Also lots the upper front cannon false wall that make the front of the ship. Most of the false cannon blocks are loose as is many mid deck connections to the frame.
I'm thinking about finding a shorter,u smaller and simpler project to replace the old girl and put her on in the back burner.
She is going to have to be completely dismantled to get right and I just don't have the heart energy proper location and temperament to deal with it right now.
I just wanted to explain why I haven't been online lately begging for help. I truly enjoy watching everyone else build the works of art shown on this site and the vast array of knowledge at.hand. the friendliness in this site is greater than any other I have ever been associated with and I thank you all.

Happy modeling
Ted
.
Sorry to hear about this setback. Bottom line the San Felipe is a bunch of sticks. What makes it special is what you put into it. Definitely put it away for now, You have this build log to let you know how to start back up when and if you want.

We both started her about the same time. I have seen you blossom as a ship builder as I kind of muddle along. You were ready to plunge into that Bluenose while I was on my second simple lobster smack. You did a superb job on that ship.

Know that there are many of us here who are including you in our prayers. I also pray that your healers use their skill and knowledge to get you up and running normally again.

Thank you. I'm grateful for the caring response

I'm very sorry to hear about your and your ships medical challenges ! I hope you have a rapid recovery and I hope you can get back to your ship build soon to fix her. I also hope you can find a project that will fill your current needs !
Thank you looking at the Occre hms beagle on Amazon. I'm going to SOS build logs and reviewing before I purchase any kit. I want something with good step by step instructions and illustrations for the basic build and that has enough detail available for me to add as I go as long.

I've completed the Beagle as a complete beginner, so I reckon it's a good choice. The only thing to bear in mind is that the very basic written instructions often contradict their detailed youtube video instructions, and then both of those contradict the picture on the box. Some stages are impossible to do as suggested, such as when they want you to tie 14 ropes to 6 inaccessible belaying pins. But it's possible to get through, making compromises here and there. You could check out the 140+ little instruction videos before buying to give you confidence on this one.

It's sad, Ted, that you're facing such health issues and problems with your project. From my own experience, I can say that I spent almost six months in the hospital, with complete paralysis for the first two months. To regain my fine motor skills, the doctors advised me to assemble something small. And you know what I did? I assembled a small galleon in a bottle while in the hospital. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of it, and the ship was a gift to the doctor who treated me. But later, when I was at home, I assembled almost the same thing, but using a different method and in a different bottle shape. I can recommend something similar to you. If you search, you can find manufacturers that offer such sets. In a hospital setting, this is one of the best ways to engage in your favorite hobby. Additionally, you can assemble cross-section sets of sailboats in limited spaces. Here are some examples in the photos.

Don’t know how I missed this thanks

An excellent idea. I'll look around for something like this. I just can't really give up on the San Felipe too.easily. it would be impractical to try a complete dissembly in the hospital environment I did accomplish exactly the same thing in my Bluenose. At least here the hull is covered. I think I'll put it on the back burner for now. Find so.etging simple that's fun to build. Currently I'm intrigued by the HMS Beagle in particular due to the simplified instructions, presence of multiple build.logs on this site and a sort of a practicum available as the Marguardt book seems to fully in the areas where additional fine details are illustrated. It's also readily available from Amazon and don't have to deal with international shipping, tarrifs etc.
I saw where you mentioned your healtnh was challenged recently. I have had you on my prayers and you are were an inspiration to me prior. I have you and your family in my prayers along with several other members of this site.
God bless and good health. I love your model!!

Hi Ted

I just landed on your built to learn that you are back at the hospital. I agree with many postings about building something easier than the San Felipe. You took over your shoulders a big task. Have you taken a look to Model Expo ? They have very interesting ship models much easier to built than the San Felipe. Moreover, as suggested, I will pick from them the Constitution Cross Section. Not too much wood cutting and need of special tools.

I wish you all the best !!!
Daniel

.
I am so sorry to read this post from you, Ted.
A sort of "One thing is going right: everything is going wrong."
But as you yourself wrote, and given the reactions: we sympathize with you and hope for the best for you. Take your time and for sure you will find a ‘smaller project’ and for later the energy to rebuild ‘the old girl’.
Regards, Peter
