I’ve been at the Connie for a couple of months as a noob. Finally got to the rigging. Ugh! I had to wait a month to start the model because I didn’t realize I needed a build slip. I will begin by showing how I started. The model is 1:100 scale and is produced by Billing Boats. Pictures will be posted soon.

Here are a few more photos from last month. The learning curve is steep. The building instructions are few and the diagrams don't go into enough detail. So I watched a lot of videos and read some articles on how others had approached planking and rigging. Then I tried to adapt things learned to my model. Sometimes without much success. I saw someone putting nail holes in the deck. Another served lines with a specially designed tool to turn the lines. Yet another had dozens of lines going between the shroud sets. I'm thinking maybe I'm not ready for all that yet. Lots of youtube videos out there. I wish I could find more about making and rigging the sails. Do y'all think staining the sails is important for the Constitution?

Well what we think doesn't really matter, it's what YOU think for YOUR ship. However if you are going for a weathered look a light staining with tea or coffee
would produce nice results. Id suggest taking an old t-shirt or something white, stain it, attach to the model with a clip and see for yourself if you like the look :)

Yes, I'm a noob. I think I spend more time reading, watching videos, pondering over the schematics, and just sitting there scratching my head and rubbing my chin than actually working on the build. I also frequently ask my wife what she thinks when I come up to something difficult. She invariably just says, "Wow!" That gives me just enough fuel to keep on plugging.

You are doing a great job for calling yourself a "noob". The Connie is not an easy ship to rig!! I have been building models for years and have not yet worked up the courage to start on my Connie or HMS Surprise yet!!

Keep going!!!
When you do it, I'm sure it will look better than mine. Experience means a lot.
