ZHL-San Felipe 1690 Build Log 1:50 scale

Hi Everyone! I am starting construction on The San Felipe. Here are some pictures of the box contents. The ship is huge! and will be a lot easier to work on at this scale. Slightly over 36" long on the hull and builds to 47" rigged! The model arrived in 5 days after I ordered it from Max at Modelshipkit on Ebay from China. It came in 2 boxes, excellent packing. Total cost with shipping $454.00. There is a cd with the build instructions in english and with full color photos.

I worked about an hour on placing the ribs and the lower decks. Quality of the laser cutting, fit and the wood is excellent. Because the ship is so big you don't have full scale plans, however it is not too hard to figure things out so far. The color photos are good quality.

Nice! I just got this kit myself and was going to start on it after I finished my current build. But now I got the POF Bluenose from YuanQing, who is the manufacturer of this kit. So I will build that first.

To keep the keel straight because it is so long I used a level clamped to it and then glued the ribs, so I will see if it stays straight. the lower deck holds the ribs in perfect alignment and I will glue that down next.

The small trim parts are really nice quality.

The keel came out straight after I removed the level from it. The decks are going on nicely. The precision of the laser cut wood is amazing! It is really enjoyable working on a model of this scale.View attachment 205098

Decking is going along smoothly. The two lower decks fit perfectly. The top deck needed a light sanding in the slots for the ribs. the top deck is curved so I needed a few clamps to hold it down against the beams. The scale of the kit makes for enjoyable work, also the accuracy of the laser cutting.

they are just a block of hardwood with a hole drilled through one end and a dowel that is a little smaller than the hole. when you clamp then down and squeeze the back tighter it lock, and is easy to release. You can make them any size. There is a piece of hard rubber on the end of each. you need that little bit of standoff or you wouldn't be able to lock them down.

I've been working on this model for the last 3 months and I find it very good quality and easy to build if you can convert a picture to the model. Any writing is very limited. I go between the pictures on the CD and the blueprint pictures very often. I hope you have as much fun and relaxation as I have had so far.

I work two hours attaching the aft Terrace decks, took a little bit of fiddling to fit right. Most the time was spent looking for a piece that I had already glued on, LOL anybody here who hasn’t done that before?

The lack of clear instructions is slowing me down on a couple of steps. Pictures are good, but there needs to be better angles to show the assembly.
I sarted on the planking, it should go fairly quickly. The battens are easy to work with and bend readily.
