Build Log For H.M.S. Bounty AL Kit But Different

Hi Daniel
Thank you
Was thinking of putting a 1mm x 1mm batton on the edge of the copper tiles but will see

Your copper tiles at the water line looks very straight. I don't see the need for the wood strip. And I think the book doesn't show one either.

After you decide if weathered or not, to protect the copper and avoid future oxidation by room humidity I gave my hull 4 coats of Minwax Lacquer. Lacquer is the most used sealer for brass and copper. It will also protect the copper tiles during the rest of your building.

Best
Daniel

Thanks for the hints Daniel

The copper being tight and straight is due to a tape marking the edge and I use a steel rule and scalpel to cut along the side of the tape

The slight imperfections in the hull planking seem to add a more realistic look to copper plating as I don't think it was overly even in that period of time

I think I will leave the copper bright and just give it a good varnish to keep it after doing the black painting till the Wales and stern sections after that is do the rudder to match the hull

Thanks Heinrich

It is easier with the tape but with single tiles or 2 tiles joined only gets a bit difficult after that as the tape is hard to handle and tears easily

Copper plating the hull is finished and also the black painted to the wales.
Will wait for a few days and then clean the copper and varnish to preserve it after that will start on the back windows and the second deck will leave the rudder till second deck and furniture are fitted so can then mount it fully on the hinges20211204_123050[1].jpg20211204_123106[1].jpg20211204_123128[1].jpg

Hi how wide is the copper tape you used for the copper plates for the hull thanks ian

G'Day Red Dragon

The Tape is from ZHL and is approx 9mm X 28mm

Hope that helps it is same tape I will be using on my HMS Surprise when I get round to it

Which ship are you looking to copper plate?

Hello Ian

I am unfamiliar with that kit but what scale is it as you can see mine is a 1:48 any smaller scale and the copper plates will look to big.
Are you going to fully rig it as well?
This one will be and painted sparingly but where required.
Hope you can start a build log so can see how you are going and it helps as other guys have probably built that kit so can help you with any problems.
Best of luck and look forward to seeing the progress

Robert

Hello All

Have had a slight Hiatus from building this winter due to sickness but getting better and will start building again soon
But in the meantime I have making ropes for the bounty and some other ships as well.
The variations of rope sizes I decided on are pictured here IMGP9253.JPGIMGP9251.JPGIMGP9249.JPGIMGP9247.JPGIMGP9245.JPGIMGP9241.JPG

This the start of my build log for the HMS Bounty. Purchased this kit in the mid 90s and just getting around to really do it.
It is a single plank kit with 2 exposed decks and I have never seen this kit anywhere or seen a build log of it so I hope this helps.
I have partly built the hull and started to plank...I found the walnut supplied was told and split to easily so stripped it off and obtained some more.
As Usual will be bashing it and putting on a copper hull and few other bits missing from the AL Kit.
Hallo @Robert B
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Birthday-Cake
How is your work on the Bounty going? Maybe you have an update for us?

Thank you

Havent been doing a lot on the bounty as yet and will be back in travel mode soon so will be less at the moment.
Will send an update when I have the deck furniture sorted out. One of the entry way sections is nowhere near the plans so will be scratch building it and also the cannons are not suitable so will be redoing those. Just doing some work on and off on the back windows so will send an update hopefully before I go away.
Have been concentrating on doing the hull for the berlin as is single panked and for me quite difficult but getting there.
Will start a log for the Berlin soon so you can catch up to its construction.
