HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Hi Grant
Is your decision about not making sails final? As I look at my royal louis I regret not making even rolled up sails. Ship would look much better but decision is up to you

Good morning. Thanks for this. Furled sails look awesome. I have not planned for sails however the way I’m rigging I could include these. If I do take this bold step I will only do furled but I have no idea how to do these. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers Grant

I added (furled) sails on my Scottish Maid. Not all, just a couple. To me it made the difference between just a model and a good looking model.

On my Black Pearl, the sails made it a bad looking model! On my Connie--not so bad. It's not easy making them look good.
Looks like it's a tricky balance. Guess I was lucky.
Perhaps best to try one first, see how it works.

I am still some ways off this call- At present hesitation is the name of the game. I definitely hear Vic’s wise words. A decision for another day for sure.
Sorry for that. I will be starting my own build in june/july so you'll have a chance to return a favour ;)
I look forward to it ;)ROTF

Cheers Grant

I was a total newb when I attempted it on the Pearl. I had done little research and new nothing about the original ship--that makes sense in that it was an imaginary ship anyway. I've seen some really nice sails in this forum, though... Mostly by people who did a lot of research. I've also seen a few rats' nests of lines by people trying to make things look realistic. I love seeing the work of these dedicated people, but I kind of dread doing the masts and rigging and sails on my SR. Maybe I'll make it an admiralty version!

Good morning. I have been researching more rigging. This ship is a tangle of ropes- I will need to order more rope againCautious. The plans I have (Heller and my Mantua) run the stays from the Mizzen to main mast via single sheave blocks to the deck to be tied off.

Super interesting is that these actually go through metal rings and not blocks (I think the British ran out of wood- (blocks make more sense). Using Longridge (the others Mackey and Goodwin also show this.) Pic courtesy of polish site.

The 3 on the Lower main mast are for the Mizzen stays. The block on the top of the mast is for the top gallant stay(why this one runs though a block???- must be British....like a cup of teaROTF.

These only apply to the main mast as the main stay and preventor stay run to the bowsprit. The Burton pendants are also fitted.

The lashings I have redone black - I tested the contrast but didn’t fit my ship. Red arrow- I got some paint on my pool table- got a bit of a rev from Arlene (the Admiral)Redface.

The frightening thing is how many more blocks still to go and for each block there is a rope....EishSpeechlessSpeechlessROTFROTF

Classes finished for the week and some time to check up on my friends. Grant, you seem to have a very clear direction of what you want to do and are indeed doing with your rigging - that it is mightily impressive. I think it is a bit premature to worry about sails, like you have said. With the rigging completed, you will have a much clearer indication as to your preferred option.

Ok second time posted the same photo- must me an age thing ROTFROTF. Or maybe I use my phone to post and getting some finger troubleCautious. No comments from Johann @RDN1954 and co- luckily Paul @dockattner is on Holiday;)....
Hello Grant, excuse me, just to inform you about certain stages of rigging equipment, I am attaching this page, I hope you can translate it
