HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

I would say, place your deadeyes, and then check how far you can open your gunportlids, before making a drastic dicission Heinrich.
If you are not satisfied, then you can always alter something in your kanon placement.
Very good advice my friend! Thumbsup Dean has also offered a very workable solution - open the gunport lids at 90 degrees.

Just when I think I have made progress, the little ship bites. This is what happens when you take your eye off the ball for a split second.

Take note of the position of the gunport second last from the stern. Now compare it to WB #1

On WB#1 there is no problem, because the gunport lid is closed. On WB#2 however, the open gunport lid will foul the deadeyes. And what is really frustrating is that there is no excuse for this blunder. I had WB#1 two meters away from where I worked, so checking that was the easiest thing in the world.

The only solution will be to close up the offending gunport and open the one most rearward (which will be strictly incorrect as I already have the two cannons mounted in the stern!)
Good morning Heinrich. I think you should only consider this after the dead eyes are on. You have done so much accurate building and to place a cannon at the rear when they are already there would deviate from your course. Who knows the lid may fit and looking at your photo, I believe it will- angle of openness depending. Cheers Grant

Thank you very much for the advice, Grant. You guys have convinced me to listen to sound reason and adopt the more conservative approach - that gunport will never know how close it came to being closed up. :)

Hello Dear Friends

This is just a brief note to say that I am still around, have not forgotten about you and that I still regard the WB as the No 1 priority. Unfortunately, I have had zero time to spend in the shipyard and very little time to follow all your wonderful logs. My apologies for that. This weekend, I thought I could get something done, but alas, COVID has intervened once more with multiple nucleic tests and hours spent in queues waiting to get tested.

What I have done, is to dry fit the cannons on the starboard side but that's it. I can't remember when last, I had so little time to build, but it is what it is.

It still looks beautiful, Heinrich. Then you just have the time to oversee everything again and let it pass in review.
Regards, Peter

Very true words, my friend. I sometimes get tunnel vision when I am working uninterrupted for periods of time, so this break does afford me the opportunity of just stepping back a little and look at things with (hopefully) fresh eyes.

Wow, what a great picture of the hull with the cannons. The oak makes for a splendid visual effect. I know it‘s a tease to not be able to progress more on the build but life takes many turns and I‘m sure that you’ll be able to mine out a moment here and there to some more building.

Sorry to hear of the Covid testing reoccurrence. It must be a big PIA.

Jan my friend, I don't know what to say about this Covid story. Other countries have thousands of cases and continue to have a relatively normal way of living. Currently, we have 5 cases in Nantong and immediately all places of entertainment (restaurants, movie theatres, karaoke bars) have been closed, while teaching is online again! I am sure that any other city in the world will only be too happy to have only 5 cases. but for the Nantong government, it is 5 cases too many.

Thank you for the most kind words on the WB, Jan - I will try my utmost to eke out some time. Have you closed up the other side yet on your WB?

I hope to fill in the WB’s cat’s grin today.

Covid here is another story and not worthy of discussion. There‘s the minority versus the majority, the Federal, State, County and city viewpoints and actions , the vaccinated versus the unvaccinated, etc. Masks versus no masks. The list goes on and on and on. I would be delighted to have the state CDC post 5 as the number of current cases.

My sentiments exactly, Jan!

Heinrich, your Willem Barentsz is looking beautifull with the cannons in place, and as the others already said, what a nice moment to reflect a few moments on her build.
Sorry to hear about the restrictions in Nantong at this moment, in the Netherlands they would be so verry happy with just 5 covid cases
I wish you a lot of strength and succes in the coming time, a big hug from my Admiral and a firm handshake from me.
Greetings also to your Admiral, from Peter and Marijke. ( just keep in touch with the Dutch )

Good evening Heinrich. Your WZ is awesome. Time out always a good thing wether by choice or otherwise. Strangely in SA Covid is hardly a topic in conversation anymore. How many cases here - I have no idea, definitely more than 5 thoSpeechless. Hope your restrictions lift soon. Cheers Grant

Thank you very much for the kind words, Peter! Please give Marijke a big hug from our side as well. Never fear, my friend - of course I will always keep in touch with you guys!:)

Thank you very much Grant - it is much appreciated! About Covid, in SA - my son tells me the exact same thing as well. That is the amazing thing about SA - the resilience to any crisis is always remarkable! As long as the Springboks are winning and the braai fires are kept going, all is good! ROTF

Sorry to hear about the possible resurgence of covid in your area. I hope total lockdowns can be avoided...
In the Netherlands we frequently hear about people (also among friends and acquaintances) getting infected, but so far those infections appear to be rather benign.

The WB-project: for sure she is growing up to become a beautiful lady.
