Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning.

I really do not like the “limey” look of my Xebec. I was hoping to make a wood finish Xebec however there is too much laminate parts and lime. I don’t have Peters skill nor the resources to remake all these parts as Peter @Ptèr did on his exemplary Cazador.(although with all his bashing and exquisite carvings we will have to call it Peters Xebec;))

So - I have decided to paint some aspects of “Simons the Corsair,s” Xebec. There are some beautiful examples of painted versions E.g. @Lologaditano Jabeque Cazador:

I went to go for a browny red almost a “hull red” inner bulwarks. This has been inspired from the Dutch Bloedvlag of the pirates back then. Simon was Dutch after all.

The stern bulwarks reduce by 8mm at the stern and 10mm at the fore part and extend by 20mm. Planked and being painted.

The bulwarks nailed and glued to the hull and cut and fitted some extensions for the stern.

I had to cut out the oar ports as my simulated closed ports did not work with the painted Bulkwarks. This is WIP and plenty of filing and fairing to do.

Decks worked a thin layer of poly applied.

The deck looks absolute fantastic Grant. I, On the other hand, do like the brown color you have chosen - it is refreshing after the plethora of red bulwarks which seem to adorn so many ships.

Very nice finishing of the deck planking, Grant. And the color of the bulwark inside looks fine.

Good afternoon Heinrich. Thanks for the compliment. I gave the red brown some serious consideration. I tested Red Matt, Red ochre and a more red rust but they all were too overbearing for what I have in mind. So went for a softer red brown. I like it a lot. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon Paul. Thanks. I do. I don’t have a model or drawings as a reference, however there will not be a lot of paint. The inside bulkwarks, cannon carriages , one or two smaller parts the Red, the railings and some supports for the mast black. Hull will be wood other than the wales which will be black. All deck fixtures will be walnut.

The stern will have some Arabian green on the upper bulkwarks (I have divided these into 2 construction processes)and there will be a touch of blue in the decorations.

Yes Grants Victory. I have committed that I will finish her after the first layer of planking on my Xebec is done:D…..good intentionsROTF

Thanks Jan. Yep - I had to mix a hull red and some bright red to make it less brown. I really like the colour and am hoping it carries through nicely. Besides the redesign of the main deck everything else thus far has been very simple so does tend to go quickly. Cheers Grant

Good morning Richie. Thanks. As I mentioned to Jan besides the redesign of the main deck so far everything is relatively simple. The hull extensions and redesign of the stern bulkwarks are foundational basis so nothing too time consuming yet.

Hi Grant,

I noticed you make a "big" hatch at the bow area just what I did. This should be a smaller hatch conform the plans of OcCre and also seen on other models. I made it bigger because I had my measurements wrong. You can still correct this is you like. I let it be, because to me it wasn't that much of a problem.
 
Just being curious; I noticed there's a beautiful kit of the Xebec out there, well basically about five, which are POF.
Why did you go for the POB, instead of flexing your wings and go for a POF kit?

Good morning Peter. I have not noticed that. I thought I used the Cazador plan scale, perhaps I followed your lead and
Measured incorrectly as well. ;) . I agree with you on most European Xebecs (Le Requin and Le Indiscret E.g. ) these hatches are smaller. I may have to leave it as this hatch fits in between the raised deck and I can’t see a solution if I had to make it smaller. Cheers Grant

Good morning Johan. 2 reasons :
1. I was looking at POF builds @kidsgalore Le Requin (stunning) and of course yours and @Peter Voogt bluenose and you guys scared me. I don’t think I’m ready for POF yet.
2. I wanted a model for a space in my bar and was size limited. I wanted a Xebec and the Cazador was the only model to fit nicely. I always knew I was going to change it up a whole lot as the Cazador was not a sexy Xebec like the Le Requin and some other Arabian ones I saw.
Thus : Grants contemporary Xebec was born.

I must say I am having a complete blast just doing my own thing- it’s like freedom and not having to be limited to some design or chasing that replication. Feels like when we climb on our off road bikes into the wilderness with no route or preplan - just hit the dirt and go…..and get lost a few times ROTF…so much fun. What Grants Xebec will end up like…..well that may be another storyROTF.
