Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Well, a Ferrari 250 GTO is hard to beat! ;)
Good morning Dean. My favorite car is the 1962/3 GTO…..
Well...I do own one, but I can't get in it either!!! ROTF

ROTFNice Dean but aren’t Ferraris red ;)
Personally I'm more in favor of American muscle cars.
My opinions of Italian cars are mine and mine alone.
Good morning Johan. Ok I will go for the Pontiac GTO 1966 for you then. I guess it’s GTO’s all the way then. G.T.O. = Grant Tyler’s Original…. Fits my Xebec ROTF

The hull is beautiful Grant. Very nice work.
I am agree with others, your hull is really beautiful.
Thank you it is appreciated.
Wow, I think mistakes or not that planking job looks mighty fine.

Jan
Good morning Jan. Thanks for the compliment. The veneer has taken a while to get used to and some lesson learnt along the way. The Port Side side is going easier :D

Cheers Grant

Good morning

Apologies for not catching up on so many of your builds this week. Been crazy busy. Today is ship building time so will play catch up.

This morning …..Tired of planking ROTF SO : I had to remake my dummy cannon it didn’t fit the gun port configuration of Occre.Too tall. So sad, I really liked it:(.

The Occre cannons are plain weird. They are wide and very low. To try get a replica looking remotely realistic is a mission.

Here is what my dummy (quick make to get size and shape) will look like. I made a copy of the Occre cannon - just kak. I painted this and stained my dummy with oak stain for comparison.

I’m going for the stain look ….I think:cool:

I also made a dummy gun port lid with some hinges. (Presticked on) The hinge is a 5mm nail with tape wrapped as a simulate hinge. Made holes with a pin to get the treenail effect. These are tiny.

I will let them settle for a while and see if I will progress with these cannons and lids.
Back to planking.
Cheers Grant

Planking on Port side continuing. I decided to do the entire port side as this will be the non display side.
Love the 'non display side' Grant, you can always relegate a blunder or two to the non-display side. Trouble is when you run out of sides to display, then it becomes the 'lesser of two evils' side ROTF

Grant, I used Sapele strips on my Bluenose II, second layer. It has a very nice colour finish, especially after a lick of clear varnish Thumbsup

Your dummy is way more convincing than the "Occre" canon. So I think you need a little more build time...
Good morning Johan. No doubt I will have to make 20 cannons. I have worked out the size and decided to go with the stain look. Now to try and make them look good:rolleyes:.
I like the oak stained carriage way better Grant. Your gun port hinges are among the better ones I've seen, really well done my friend.
Good morning Daniel. I agree I will go with the stain on the cannon. I am surprised with the hinges- it was a let’s see if this works scenario. I need to get some new small clippers as my cut ones do not get the cut nice. Thanks for the compliment.
I agree with the boys - the replacement cannons are the way to go! Any chance you can drill out the muzzle of the cannon? Not sure what toys you have in the GT Shipyard...
Thanks Paul. That is a good idea. It will make a big difference. I have a dremel however to get a precision muzzle I am going to have to make a plan. These all have to be exact or it will be a mess. My shipyard is very limited Redface. Cheers Grant

Good morning Mark. That is funny. The way I build the lesser of two evils will probably be the way to go. ROTF. As I progress the Sapele is growing on me. This kit was really affordable so I did not expect good woods. If you work the lime and Sapele it can be presentable . Ahh let’s see Mark, as you know with this hobby the proof is in the pudding…..one side or the other;).
Cheers Grant

I just thought muscle cars were taking over in this log....luckily some shipbuilding is still there.... ROTF
The muzzle of the cannon barrels can be bored out. I did it with mine and makes a huge difference.

Your own carriage of the cannon looks great, go for that one. Love the oak stain on it. Just make 19 more and you're done.... :p
Actually, I found out later that the carriages should be longer and a bit slimmer (smaller) in width to be exact copies of the day. However, no one will notice.

Good morning Peter. I saw your bored out cannons and it certainly makes a difference. This may test my skill level a bit. I also enjoy the stain, unfortunately I still have 20 to go as this was a quick size and test make. I have been looking at how you made so many parts/fittings on your Xebec (you have bashed this out of the park so I can't call it a Cazador anymore ;) ) and it is an amazing quality build. Cheers Grant

I like your detailed gun port lids, Grand. That are tiny hinges and ‘treenails’!
And about the gun carriage, you can enjoy yourself completely till every kind of detail you want/can. ;)
Regards, Peter
