Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Dear Grant

Thank you so much for an unforgettable evening. The mad advocate, Evert and Lume enjoyed the evening immensely, while yours truly could only marvel at the excellent standard of your craftsmanship - both on the Victory and the Xebec. It was wonderful meeting Arlene and Ashtyn and Mike. Remember, next year the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai is all systems go, so I am looking forward to returning the favor.

No photograph can do the incredibly sleek lines of the Xebec justice. The color differentiation created with the different wood types is something to behold!

Keep well my friend and - once more - a big thank you!

Good morning. Arlene, Ashtyn and I met the The Dutch ship master and his family last night. Unfortunately good old SA power cuts put an end to the braai at my place however we went to my favorite restaurant on the Melkbosstrand beachfront. A wonderful evening was had. Typical South Africans we forgot to take photos. Here is one of H and I by my Victory.

Good morning Peter. I can only imagine if Heinrich wanted a photo of me holding the Victory Redface

very nice photos. I love photos when our members get together, Don't forget - we are an International Forum! Thumbsup

Good Morning Paul and Jim. It is a good thing to meet the guys we all chat to on this forum. We should have an international SOS get together where we can all swop our “war stories”……Cape Town sounds like a good place;)ROTF.
Cheers Gra

Man, I would love to visit the African Contenant and South Africa. The author Wilbur Smith made that country come alive in my mind.

A great writer. My father is hooked on his books and stories about Africa and all. So I know what you mean. perhaps we should do a site meeting with all the willing members in Capetown and enjoy an evening braai and talk about shipmodeling.

Thanks Heinrich.

I’d rather travel somewhere the power stays on all the time.

I don’t know, that red Ferrari jacket is stealing the show! ROTF

Good morning Daniel. I remember years ago I read all his books. His last few didn’t grab me so much tho. A troubled and complex place Africa however its beauty, raw adventure and diversity is unrivalled- well in my opinion. I love the ruggedness and freedom this country gives. Non the less most people live in poverty and there is a great sadness which prevails here too. Cheers Grant

Good morning Peter. Now that sounds like a plan :D

Good morning Paul. ROTF. It adds to the adventure and gives one more of an African experience…..why do you think us South Africans love to braai….we don’t need a stove;)

Good morning Dean. I’m a Ferrari nut and it is my warmed jacket as well. Not only that we took Heinrich to Maranellos restaurant so I had to keep with the theme:D

Good morning. Cat Davits :

From the time I opened the box Paul’s (@dockattner ) sirens grabbed me and I have been under their influence since. With the cat Davits on this Xebec I did not enjoy the open sheaves or the metal parts provided so closed them and made the forward sheave with some 4x4 African Walnut.

Modeling Dyslexia:
I only had one chance at these (My last piece of 5x5 African walnut) and I got my measurements wrong (How 35mm =30 mm only Grant knows…! and I cut the sheaves a little big. I angled the top of each Davit down. As a result of my Dyslexia the forward angle of the Davits happens after the rail edge and not at it. I angled the 5x5 Davit on the 6x6 Davit rail marginally to counter this as the Davit end should be square to the rail.

Hmmmm….had to go with the result. Added some metal nails, and a pear cleat. I have tossed all the metal cleats the kit provided.

Pics from all angles.

PS : the symmetry redo on the railing and bulwark is moving ahead at a snails pace.
Cheers Grant

Hi Tyler , allow me to make an observation of my own on this Kit, it is utopia that the" Capone's Cranes" are fixated on a handrail , imagine the weight of the anchors).I again reiterate that "a donkey can never become a trail horse ". Sorry that I invaded YOUR yard.Frank

Hi Grant! Those cat davits look awesome. I can't believe how those "loose" parts which I saw during my visit, had all been brought together into a such a nice, cohesive unit. Great work, my friend!

Good evening Peter. Ha…we need to post our silly errors. I must say after installing the Davits I would not have redone even if I had some more wood. Thanks.

Good evening Frank. You may invade my yard anytime. You have helped me time and time again and I appreciate your expertise and guidance. I agree, there are many aspects on this kit which just don’t make functional sense. Case in point the these Davits would not hold the anchor weight. Thanks Frank. Cheers Grant
