Halifax, colonial schooner. Unicorn, China. Scale 1:50 [COMPLETED BUILD]

will continue, if you guys do not mind!
Hallo again,
I would be happy, if you show us more of your work on the Halifax.....BTW a very good model!
Can you also tell us a little bit about the model, f.e. on basis of which plans / drawings, is it scratch or a kit, which scale etc.....
Many thanks in advance

So have a couple of minutes to continue.

As I wrote, its a chinese kit. The manufacturer is Unicorn, and the scale (they say) is 1:50.
Highly likely ))))) they used the draws of Harold Hahn.
I do not know why, but they simplified all the masting and rigging. When I worked on the model I did not use the kit draws, I used the original draws in this part.
To be continued)))
Now next pics portion20161106_121632.jpg20161106_125340.jpg20161106_144336.jpg20161106_190316.jpg20161106_190500.jpg20161127_173632.jpg20161204_191301.jpg20161204_191432.jpg20161211_193031.jpg20161225_195536.jpg20161225_195548.jpg20161225_202042.jpg20161225_202222.jpg

Nice progress! Are all the parts clean lasercut? Ik am happy with my zhl kit and the lasercut parts. Better then the European ones in had.

Its a retrospective)), the model is completed. I am happy to show the "historic" pics))
The parts were lasercut, yes, but one needs some sandpaper to make them clean)))

Now some words on the model and the impovements I made.

Since the Chinese manufacturer used (with some significant changes and simplifications) the drawings developed in the 70s of the last century by Harold Hahn, in case of controversial issues duing the consruction , especially in masting and rigging, , preference was given to the drawings of Hahn.

1. HULL
Only frames, part of the planking, gunwales, décor and bow figure were used from the kit.
The keel, the stems, the wales, the the rudder and the tiller are scratched using a pear and a black hornbeam.
The steering hinges are operating.
Keel was improved (there was a manufacturer's mistake in the lenght.)
Deck planking is made of maple, scratch.
All the black details on the model, including the details of the spar, except the gunwale, are made of black hornbeam to show the color.
The stem is composited from pear and black hornbeam.
The details of bow (head timbers and head rails) are scratced. Material - black hornbeam

No paints were used, except the gunwales.

2. Artillery.
The barrels and carridges are used from the kit. All metal parts of the carridges, sighting wedges are scratced. Guns are partially tied.
On falconets - barrels are from the kit, brackets and trunnions are scratched.

3. Masts
Made entirely on its own based on drawings by H.Hann. Materials - pear, hornbeam, kumer.

4. Rigging - scatched on the basis of drawings by H. Hannah, including ropes (polyester), rims and hooks (brass).
The deadeyes used from the kit.
Blocks partially from the kit, partly aftermarket, partially self-made.

5. Others

The gratings and pumps are scratched
Anchors are used out of the kit, stocks are scratched
Cat-beams and anchor buoys are scratched.
The life
boat is scratched, and secured on the deck historically correctly.

During the construction of the model, I did not use the kit photo etched details.

So the model was finished in Aril, 2018
Yestarday she was returned to me from Romania - participated in NAVIGA World Shipmodeling Championship.
Total 96.33 points, gold medal and first place in class C8 (together with modeler from Romania).20180911_071329.jpg

My Congratulations to this result and Success!

It is also very important to know, that a model with kit basis from a chinese manufacturer can get a gold medal result at NAVIGA !!!!

May I ask on which plan-basis the judges compared the model?
As I know it is very important in Naviga, that the model is built as accurate as possible compared with documentation on plans etc.

The model was sent to the competition with 2 sets of plans - chinese and original by Harold Hahn. The hull is the same in both versions. Chinese mfg just used the hull plans which are on the web. The masting and rigging are different. They did not follow Hahn's reconstruction. So I scratched the masting and rigging completely according to the Hahn plans and they were presented as a support and proof. So no issues were arised. NAVIGA guys didn not even believe from the first sight that the model is based on the kit ))
