The Royal Caroline / ZHL

You are building the 1/30 scale the big one. I am building the 1/50 scale I looked hard at the 1/30 and decided to build the small scale, sometimes my pocketbook gets in my way!! I purchased the wood carvings upgrade that fit good, I decided to use a brown Mahogany stain I thinned it out to the depth I wanted and then used a matt topcoat. I agree with the instructions even on the 1/50 not good very confusing, caused a few maitakes on my part! This is my third Chinese kit so am getting used to the flow of the plans:rolleyes: I thought about covering the below the Wales as you did looks great when painted white, but I am hung-up on displaying my planking work!! the below deck work you did I bet looks great and not using full masts and all the riggings also is popular thought about doing that on a kit sometime or purchasing a kit that is designed with that in mind. If you have photos of your below decks living quarters would like to see!! Enjoy!!
 
The sizes I stated are diameters. I will use .8mm for the lower shrouds and .6mm for the ratlines for the uppers. I will be using .6mm for the shrouds and .4mm for the ratlines I don't know if these are per scale 1/50 but they are what I have decided on

If you have not already started, at your scale, would you consider ratlines that are closer to scale, 0.2mm, half the diameter? Oversized ratlines really show up at the clove hitches because they are so heavy compared to scaled rope. Just a thought.......:)

Bandito- My opinion, if you can build one of the more complicated Chinese kits, you can pretty much build anything! I ordered the 1/50 RC for a friend in FL with the pear carvings, also a ZHL xebec ..very high quality, but for the next one I will mill and replace deck planking, etc.

I did replace all the deck planking's with 1x4mm planks cut in the configuration lengths I wanted, I don't care for the deck plank material provided with the kit. .5 is too thin for me!! You have me thinking on the ratline diameter? I was planning on .4mm. If you don't mind me asking where in florida do you live I am in Ocala!

Some of my golf buddies moved up your way to Top of the World. I'm in SW Florida, about 20 miles east of Naples in Ave Maria.

Based on the 1719 through 1750 Establishments the deck planks were probably 2" thick for vessel her size so 1mm would be spot on. Good call on making the change.

Closing in on finishing the Caroline got the rear mast to rig Ran out of rigging line "waiting" I did the rigging line in .8 mm which is too large and out of scale it probably should have used .6mm but where the last resting place for the ship is high on a wall and you can see the rigging better from far away? The install plans behind the ship in the picture is the Misticque 1/50 scale from Corel. I decided to give the Chinese ZHL kits a rest for a while. I Have never built a Corel kit!! It has English Instructions not really necessary pictures are fine if you have built any Chinese kits you know what I am Talking about.1000000576.jpg1000000576.jpg
 
I have finished the Caroline! The kit was enjoyable to build there were some issues as with all Chinese kits! The instructions were confusing at times it had too different sets of plans, and they did not follow each other so that led to some assembly issues for me mainly in the super structure. one showed making certain parts and the other showed the parts were already made for you?? strange so at times I got confused, there was issues with the crows' nests the problem was probably mine, but it caused issues on how they sat in relation to the yards which caused me rigging problems later on? also the rigging was a learning experience, very complicated lines had a tendency to touch each other due to have a very complicated rigging system? again the problems were created by me, but the instructions didn't help. knowing what I know now I probably would not have purchased the kit. I am going to take a break from Chinese kits for a while! I have finally decided to build a woody joe kit The Catalan a Kit I have wanted to build for years it will give me a break on tedious rat lines and rigging. It looks like a well-designed kit looking forward to building it.1000000580.jpg
 
Congratulations, Bandido! She looks good. Rigging is always a challenge. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if the lines cross. You’re the only one who will know.
 
I think the upper strake of the wales should be below the strake that comes just under the gallery. A strange thing is that the painting of her from 1750 shows two strakes of wales but the drawings show a single wider band.
