HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Good afternoon. I redid the deck clamps on the bulkwalks. I did not like the kit cherry ones so took them off (a while ago). The kit has all this and the planking on the bulkwark painted red which would be fine however I am not painting these and the contrasting wood colours did not go down well with me.

I have used a 2mmx5mm birch wood for the clamp- it is close enough to the maple not to distract.
I tested some tree nailing :

I rather liked this look and tree nailed the new clamps .

I also did a little bit of neating up the gun ports but this takes a while and I did not finish these….getting there tho.
Cheers Grant

Wow, beautiful work, even up close ! :)

Grant! That's some gorgeous work! The combination of wood you've chosen works splendidly - a very appealing contrast between light and dark and yellow/tan and red/brown. What is the wood you're using for the deck planking? Also, at scale, what is the height of the combings?

Blessings.
Chuck
Hi Chuck …adding to previous post the combings themselves are 1.5mm

Wow, beautiful work, even up close ! :)
Thank you very much Jeff.
Grant,
As Chuck just said - YES indeed gorgeous work.
Good morning John. Thanks for th compliment it is appreciated.
Indeed very neat work, the wood colors are great .

Jan
Thank kindly Jan. The cherry and maple is a hard contrast however I quite like how it is turning out.
Love the look of the birch in the photos!

Hope it looks as good in person. The first photo (of the deconstruction) looked ugly/messy but you cleaned it up well. The finished product, with treenails and all, looks great!!
Good morning Brad. I am happy how the birch and maple came out- so similar I can’t really see the difference. I have a love hate relationship with this build and I cannot count how many redo’s I am doing to get it looking reasonable. Luckily boiling water and nail polish remover has worked a treat so far for my deconstruction. I am finally getting it to look how i want the “look and feel” to be, so going forward I think my redos should slow down…….hopefully ROTF. Thank you for the compliment and checking out my project it is appreciated. Cheers Grant

It all looks great Grant, colours, different types of wood, general construction, workmanship and I really like the tree-nailing.
Good morning Roger. Thank you very much. It has been quite an adventure so far and slowly slowing I’m starting to enjoy the outcomes.
It is hard to tell from the photos but is appears you went the extra step to use different thicknesses for the spirketting, quick work and forecastle clamp. Assuming you did, that is very impressive.
Allan
Good morning Allan. You have a keen eye. I did make the clamp and spirketting 5mm vs the 4mm bulkwalk planks. The clamp is 2mm thinks vs the 1.5mm. So I did attempt it and if I look hard I see it. I don’t think it will be very noticeable once the upper deck and fittings start being added. Cheers Grant

Hi Grant,
I think these little things are mostly of importance to ourselves on our own builds, not to mention a few pain in the neck viewers (like me) I find that the contract is a great reference for these kinds of things so I was wondering if you use the contract for a reference?
Allan

I need to put ricochet rabbit back in his box before I get myself into trouble.

I have nothing finished and adding deck furniture before finishing the bulkwalks is pretty stupid….. ROTF ROTF ROTF

Anyway here are the 2 riding bits. I have modified the kit bits to get close to Goodwins interpretation. Here are pics from Goodwin:

And my attempts at modifying the parts. You will notice the 1.5mm added to the bottom of the bits which I will still plank around some aspects. I had to do this to keep the scale right as the kit just adds parts to the deck.

Trying to work out the deck pattern while leaving off planks haphazardly is interesting……I can guarantee I have screwed this up ROTFROTF. Hopefully it will not be noticeable as I move forward.
Cheers Grant
Hi Grant, sorry about these remarks for the purpose of reality, the gunwale is not there? The patience is from Kit two pieces? Thank you. Frank

Hi Allan. I have looked at the contract however I’m not using the measurements as they are too different from the kit and wood supplied etc. I used Goodwins book and make some changes I can. Cheers Grant

Good morning Frank. Yes they are all the kit parts. Your “gunwale” is the kit water way in Cherry wood so it makes an unusual contrast. It is not 100% accurate in measurements but I’m living with it.

The riding kit bits are pretty accurate in relation to Goodwin. I have made some upgrades. The nailing may be wrong as this was my interpretation. Cheers Grant

Grant, sincere apologies for being such a johnny-come-lately to your latest build. Your HMS Enterprise is looking fantastic and taking shape in all the right ways, which is what I have come to expect of course, and I look forward to spending more time on the forum and following your progress :)
Good morning Stranger. Thanks Mark. How are you doing ? Cheers Grant
