Your work looks really great. Simply great. Quick question: How did you make the wooden dowels? What size are they?

Good afternoon Gunther. Thank you for you encouragement it is appreciated. I’m assuming you are referring to the tiny dowels I used for my treenail. I use a wooden toothpick (not bamboo which leaves uneven colouring) which I push through a 0.5mm homemade draw plate. The key is not to glue them in but rather push them into the hole. Glue also makes them splotchy. I used polyurethane as a finish and this “glues” them into the plank. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. I decided to get back in sync with the directions. It is time to fit the rudder.

Everything is WIP. It has taken plenty of hours and nothing is finished so here is an interim view.

1: Pintles and Gudgeons.
Drilling holes (3 drill bits broken)

Busy blackening

Made the rudder- not finished .I don’t caulk this as after I poly it is too defined for my liking:


I added some plank bits to the stern post where the gudgeons will be fitted. This took a very long time…..I have tried to keep the look of an incomplete, haphazard WIP finish.

I then applied 1 coat of Matt Polyurethane up to the wale line. Above this I left raw so my external planks will glue to the frames when I get there.

Those are some pretty spectacular hinges - were these from the kit or did you fabricate them? Either way they surely did turn out great!

Looks like a full blacksmith shop is hiding somewhere in your workshop. Those pintles and grudgeons look superb!!

I like what you've done with the planking, which I anticipate cover the areas where you will pin the grudgeons. Wonderful planning and execution!!! That will look awesome.

The finish you put on brings out the beauty of the wood also!!!

Thanks Paul. I am very happy with how the finish on the frames came out. Took me a while to find out the best way to finish which was to scrape rather than sand and then “polish” with steel wool 000.

I wish I could lay claim to the pintles/gudgeons but other than drilling the nail holes and blackening they are all kit.

Good morning Brad. I finally bought a soldering iron however the blacksmith remains closed as the kit produced these wonderful pintles/gudgeons. I’m still holding thumbs that my haphazardly part planking for the gudgeons will still look good as the ship progresses……we will find out .
