This is great work Grant, i love it
Good afternoon Peter. Thank you very much indeed.
Hey Grant,

Here I am again. I've been on holiday for a while. Of course I had to see how things were looking after your operations. Nice to have you back on board.

Your work looks really great. Simply great. Quick question: How did you make the wooden dowels? What size are they?

Your fan as always

Best regards

Günther Ship-1
Good afternoon Gunther. Thank you for you encouragement it is appreciated. I’m assuming you are referring to the tiny dowels I used for my treenail. I use a wooden toothpick (not bamboo which leaves uneven colouring) which I push through a 0.5mm homemade draw plate. The key is not to glue them in but rather push them into the hole. Glue also makes them splotchy. I used polyurethane as a finish and this “glues” them into the plank. Cheers Grant

Hey Grant,

Thanks for your reply. That makes sense. I will take up the idea. But I don't know whether I can realise these dowels on a scale of 1 : 75. Let's see.

Cheers

Good afternoon. I decided to get back in sync with the directions. It is time to fit the rudder.

Everything is WIP. It has taken plenty of hours and nothing is finished so here is an interim view.

1: Pintles and Gudgeons.
Drilling holes (3 drill bits broken)

Busy blackening

Made the rudder- not finished .I don’t caulk this as after I poly it is too defined for my liking:

I added some plank bits to the stern post where the gudgeons will be fitted. This took a very long time…..I have tried to keep the look of an incomplete, haphazard WIP finish.
IMG_6340.jpegIMG_6342.jpeg
I then applied 1 coat of Matt Polyurethane up to the wale line. Above this I left raw so my external planks will glue to the frames when I get there.

That’s a nice looking set of hinges and outside finish, Grant.

Looks like a full blacksmith shop is hiding somewhere in your workshop. Those pintles and grudgeons look superb!!

I like what you've done with the planking, which I anticipate cover the areas where you will pin the grudgeons. Wonderful planning and execution!!! That will look awesome.

The finish you put on brings out the beauty of the wood also!!!

Thanks for sharing.

Hey Grant,

What can I say? I can only agree with the previous speakers. You show first class modelling skills and I am very happy to see these shots of your build. Thank you very much for showing them.

The hinges are really great. It's bad when the drills keep breaking off, and great that you have enough of them. You have my great respect.

Cheers

Beautiful finish on those frames, Grant!

Those are some pretty spectacular hinges - were these from the kit or did you fabricate them? Either way they surely did turn out great!
Thanks Paul. I am very happy with how the finish on the frames came out. Took me a while to find out the best way to finish which was to scrape rather than sand and then “polish” with steel wool 000.

I wish I could lay claim to the pintles/gudgeons but other than drilling the nail holes and blackening they are all kit.
Cheers Grant

Everything looks super, especially the five pairs of rother irons. Were these supplied in the kit or did you scratch build them?
Allan
Thanks Allan. As I said to Paul these are kit supplied. While I’m finding the kit a challenge and is admiralty style the quality of the parts are excellent. Cheers Grant

Thank you Peter. Hopefully I can get them all fitted smoothly.
Like always, a wonderful looking job !
Thank you kindly Jeff
It looks so good. These frames and colour
Thanks Stephan. I’m pretty chuffed with how these frames came out. Whew was a lot of scraping and steel wool finishing tho.

Good morning Brad. I finally bought a soldering iron however the blacksmith remains closed as the kit produced these wonderful pintles/gudgeons. I’m still holding thumbs that my haphazardly part planking for the gudgeons will still look good as the ship progresses……we will find out :D.
Glad you are on the mend and getting to spend some time working on your Enterprise. She’s looking great - your craftsmanship and eye for detail is superb.
Good morning Hugh. Thank you very much. I do appreciate the encouragement. Yep my knee rehab is going very well so far which makes me very happy:D

Good morning Gunther. Thank you for this post- it is appreciated. I do give it my best shot and as long I’m enjoying myself (even in breaking tiny drill bits) then it is all good.
Cheers Grant
