Fair American 1:48 by Model Expo

Welcome back, Friends, to the Shutdown Shipyard. I could get used to this whole not-going-to-work thing. Luckily, I can afford to miss a few paychecks, but I’m not looking forward to first contact with my inbox when this is over with.

Took all day to make all the quoins and their handles, but with perseverance and many wasted toothpicks I got it done.

Mr. Basswood inspects the first scratchbuilt carriage to come off the assembly line. This will be the pathfinder to check the height of the bulwarks, which are reputedly too low based on the kit instructions.

The carriage is still rough, but will get some finish sanding after I’ve laid down a coat of paint.

Appears that another run of bulwark planking is called for. Going to make things aft interesting when I get to that point.
Good morning. Very cool cannon. I had a similar problem with my Bounty with my bulwark being too low or my cannon too tall. One way to reduce the cannon height is to notch the axel into the cannon. May give you 1mm. Cheers Grant

In what is supplied in these kits the gun carriages always seem to sit too high or low.
The carriages in my original kit were minuscule (and long since lost to history), and the ones provided in this kit were big and clunky. I tried my best to scratchbuild carriages in proportion to the barrels, but they are admittedly far from perfect.

Bob Hunt’s practicum notes the bulwarks need to be raised, and I believe I saw the same in another Fair American build log somewhere. With Mr Basswood standing there, they do seem rather low for a fighting ship.

I'm now wishing I had thought of installing lights on my own project. Then again, with my level of expertise in electronics, the entire ship probably would have gone up in flames as soon as I pressed the "on" button.

And although it's a small thing, I'm seriously impressed with that eye bolt! It's smaller than any of the ones I had to do but much more refined.

Thank you! The eyebolts are easy enough to make as long as you’ve got a decent pair of small pliers and single-face cutters.

Thank you, again, to @GrantTyler for highlighting what I probably should have noticed myself. I came up with a jig to hold the assembled carriages and was able to drop them about 1.5mm.

Still sitting pretty high to the bulwarks, but perhaps just low enough to get away with leaving the bulwarks at the current height per the plans.

Thoughts, anyone?
