A Dutch Fluyt in shell first, reconstructing the "Ghost ship" scale 1:36

Hello Maarten, Congratulations on your study and research. This is the big difference that makes your work so valuable. Thank you for sharing it with us. Frank

Nice pictures from you midel as well as the Samuel. But seeing you model yesterday in A’dam in real life was nicer.
Regards, Peter
Hi Peter,
Yes Amsterdam was a nice event again allthough the day is always to short to see everything and speak everybody.
Sure your model stood definately out of the crowd.

I missed that ship yesterday, I like the way how you make a half hull filling to show the way these beams are "ordered"
Think I will keep the PS side open so you can see the structure of frames and decks. Above the upper wales the planking will be fitted. In this build the planking is also needed otherwise the hull will fall apart.

A long weekend away with our motorhome so time for some holiday carving again.
This time it is the Swan which will be on the stern of the ship.
We know there was a Swan as the body is laying next to the wreck at the sea bottom.
You see the body with wings and a part of his upper leg which is broken of.

It is suprizingly to see this carving is nearly a full figure protruding far from the transome surface.

This is the interpretation of Nicolas Ericsson, the archeologist working on this project.

I copied it as a start of my carving and transferred it to a piece of boxwood.

The beginning is there.

Secondly multiple contemporary gable Stones from old Dutch house.

And the Swan on the Willem Barentz replica
Zwaan witte swan.jpg

As the torso of the Swan in my ship is nearly a full 3d figure I want to create a Swan which is also nearly full 3d and is free from the surface with it neck, head and tail. Something like the head of this one.
Zwaan steyn.jpg

First some course carving setting put the rough figure.

And the same on the reverse side.

Followed by finetuning, finetuning, ......

And now trimming down to proper propertions.

Comparing to the original torso.

Starting on the paws.
Luckily Niklas Eriksson didn't decide to become vetinarian but archeologist as he gave his swan chicken legs ROTF

And this is how it looks sofar, idea is to give it one paw over the lower freeze of the stern.

Good morning Maarten. I always respect you guys who have the skills to carve. I bought a 3D printer because I can't carve to save my life but I always feel like I'm cheating a little bit. Wonderful work. Cheers Grant
