I can’t believe it’s been about two months since my last progress post. Yes, I have been working on my model, and yes it has been slow…very slow, fully rigging the spar deck guns. I spent most of my time fabricating the necessary gun tackle, and that took forever. Each of the six aft guns sitting on the fully planked portion of the deck required a recoil rope attached to the bulwarks and 5 tackles. I planned using pins to lock in the recoil rope end loops into the eyebolts, but discovered I did a poor job installing the eyebolts for the pins to pass through.
First, when I originally installed the eyebolts, I pushed the eyebolts into the bulwark right up to the eye neglecting to account for the thickness of the rope loop passing behind the pin and against the bulwark. When the recoil rope loop was inserted between the two eyebolts, it blocked the pin from dropping down from the top eyebolt through the rope loop and through the bottom eyebolt.
Second, even if I did that right, my eyebolts as it turned out, were not perfectly aligned vertically also blocking the pin from dropping straight down through the lower eyebolt. I ended up using thread to perform the job of the pins. The thread was passed through the top eyebolt through the recoil loop and out the bottom eyebolt. The two ends of the thread were ten tied together securing the recoil rope to the bulwark. And that was no easy feat either. The beauty of it all is that this detail is buried and is hardly visible.
Finally, all the tackles were installed, and rope coils (where used) were glued into position. I didn’t like the way the tackles used to pull back the long gun carriage away from the gun ports looked. The blocks were too close together so it looked like you couldn’t pull anymore to move the carriages. They were left off.
That’s a lot of hardware. It required 88 sets of tackles. The 10 guns amidship next to the cut away planking have four sets of tackle and no rope coils and the four carronades, and two long guns at the bow will again have full sets of tackle with rope coils. The summary:
