Got the railings blackened. They are in place and can be removed if necessary. Hopefully, it will not be necessary to remove them

What ho, shipmates! Just a few quick pictures of the head rigging. It's a neat cat's-cradle. However, I'm not sure I'm happy with the heaviness of the ropes - too thick? Perhaps impatience got the best of me. I used the thinnest I had. Thoughts? I'm hoping that the standing rigging on the masts will help balance things out.

First the kit plan and then the French plan for the head rigging for easier comparison to what I did.

Chuck, maybe they are a skosh heavy, but not terribly so IMHO. Daresay I would not have even given it a thought had you not mentioned it. Will be even less noticeable when she’s fully dressed.

You photographed this part of your model in 'a very uncomfortable way'. Very high contrast with dark lines over a light back/underground. That calls for ‘attention’. I am very curious to see the model as a whole 'in normal' circumstances and viewing distance.
I estimate that it will turn out much better then, and that you yourself will be satisfied with this result. For me it looks neat and stylish.

In the end, I got the first planking done. After sanding thoroughly and I mean thoroughly . . . .

Here's the bow and stern after clean-up. And man were those little stubs of plywood a pain to sand flush . Also, I left the bulkhead extensions aboard until I finished the second planking.

I'm currently with a Viking build - going to Japan next (Higaki Kaisen), but always on my list was a paddle type ship for a new learning experience -- yes - Of course - an American Mississippi type, but this French example explores more interesting learning ideas for me.
Will order it.... Your excellent log will be my faithful guide!!!

As to you buying the kit - at least you'll be doing it with open eyes AND ModelExpo has it on sale for $435 down from $670 . On the other hand, I've looked through some of your work, sir! Love it! I'm sure you'll create a L'Orenoque to beat the band!

If I may, you should know that my decision to build L'Orenoque was uninformed AND a product of being bitten by a peculiar bug. The bug: sidewheel warships. I fell in love with them while I was building Model Shipways' Harriet Lane. I got L'Orenoque with extremely incomplete information about what the kit represented and the real ship. Call me a rube.

If I had to do it again, AND my interest was a paddle type ship for a new experience, I would just build Harriet Lane and make a few more modifications based on the readily available actual plans for the ship. Harriet Lane is on sale for $195 down from $300. I would never spend $435 for the L'Orenoque kit.

If I had your skills, I might just go for a scratch build of USS Susquehanna using McArdle's monograph and 1:96 scale plan set.

In any event, shipmate, happy to be of service and thank you for you kindness about this build.

You've given more to think about Your suggestion of the Harriet Lane kit is a good one. I looked at a log here at SoS. @Bill-R - VERY nice indeed.
Ebay has some on sale in the $80.00s (who knows) - That said as comfortable as the pricing is - I find the actual kit IMO too basic - I would need to for-all-intent-and-purposes pretty much scratch build it.

Hmmmm - yes, the L'Orenoque is pricey - certainly not worth $600.. Thought I still find the actual ship much more interesting, and complicated looking as a vessel - And having been born in France the ship also includes a foolish emotional tug. Need to finish your log PS: (did look ahead -wow superb work!! ----

I will spend more time with your suggestions -- Right now Norway, is occupying my thoughts. then on to Japan - So, US during the Civil War or France (ending her sad career as a whaler --- to be determined.
