L'Orenoque Mamoli 1:100 scale

Martin! That was the plan 'til you outed me ROTF

I got really busy getting ready for the fall semester to start. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have to prepare, I have taught the same classes every fall for ten years. It puts me in mind of a quote attributed to Frank Lloyd Wright: "An expert is someone who doesn't have to think."ROTF This year I am teaching a class I last taught in 2011 so I am spending most of my time on that.

All of my other time has gone to this:

John! I'm glad that you're enjoying the log and given the number of dremels in your collection I'd say go for it - loaded with challenges and opportunity for detail. But dude - you can't keep the Admiral waiting breakfast ROTF ROTF ROTF

Blessings.

These little models are so cute ;)
So, are you thinking about the next one yet? I have a suggestion, but she doesn't have paddle-wheels. :)
Jerry! Nice one! Here's my ever shifitng list -

Next was supposed to be all 5 feet of HMS Warrior - I have the kit and the designated space for her in the main living room - couldn't believe it when the Admiral gave me a thumbs up on that plan.

Then I saw a couple of builds of the galley La Real - Don John of Austria's flagship at the Battle of Lepanto - I have the MarisStella galley kits (in the stash for 6 years now) and I have the itch to build them.

I have also been thinking to do USS Missouri (the Civil War Era one I know she didn't serve but still - Missouri and a sidewheeler) - a first scratch build.

USS Susquehanna is also in the idea rack as a scratch build with McArdle's monograph and 1:96 scale plan set.

The original plan had me building USS Kearsarge with the BlueJacket kit ($$$$$$$) after HMS Warrior but I'm not sure. I have also been thinking about building one of the big Royal Navy sidewheelers - those guys have really detailed plans available.

All that said, shipmate, I'm dying to hear your suggestion!!!

Blessings, Peace. Gratitude.
Chuck

I have McArdle's book on Constellation. He built a nice model, but don't reply on him for history - he didn't know anything beyond the first thing he was told by the first person he found, and ran with that. That may not be such an issue for Susquehanna as it was for Constellation. I was gonna suggest Susquehanna, since it was a side-wheeler, but I remember you mentioning Warrior, which means I have to finish the 68 pounder to go with the Armstrongs.

Hey Chuck,

da hat sich ja einiges getan in deinem Schiffchen. War lange nicht im Forum. Aber ich musste bei dir unbedingt vorbeischauen. Wirklich sehr schön geworden, fantastisch …

Viele Grüße

Gunther!

Servus! Happily, I can read and speak German. I can write it too, but I'll be missing umlauts etc. :) Thank you for taking the time to visit, shipmate and for the very kind compliments! I hope all's well and you are busy living your best life (which I hope includes making excellent tiny things).

Blessings. Peace. Gratitude.

Chuck,

An update - still only 1/2 way through your superb log. Your skill set is way up there. So - I had decided that this kit would be
on my list of builds, especially seeing the potential - mostly based on the images and notations in your log. If I may within your log?
Given that others might also be interested in the following;

Big “shout out” to Model Expo.

Hard to pass up at $435.00 ordered one last week (on back-order) all good.

Yesterday (7/01) went to their site looking for other items - Oh Oh!! - July 4th sale ALL items 50% off. Looked at the L’Orenoque - indeed sale price is now $335.00. Hmmm…

Called Model Expo. Voice mail. three times - I did not leave any messages - BUT today they called me... How about that!. We went through my pre-order. I said, “I know that I already purchased this item for $435.00. It’s ok, but, if you could accommodate the $100.00 discount to its now current price that would be nice”?. If not, all ok look I forward to the kit when it arrives”.

Well, Model Expo said, “no, not ok, we’ve just credited your CC pre-order for a $100.00 - So nice of them!!! Even after I said if you can't not an issue!!!

Cheers,

PS: Will get back to your log after this weekends burgers and hotdogs :cool:ROTF

John!

I hope you enjoyed and have recovered from your burgers and dogs and (brew?)!:)

I'm really pleased that you're enjoying this log! I'm glad you saw the Model Expo sale! Yup! You can't beat 50% off with a hickory stick! ROTF I got the email on it and am being wishy-washy pulling the trigger on La Real. Maybe next time for me. I'm glad you got in there! My experience with them has been first class. They always go the extra mile on customer service. I want them to do a USS Susquehanna in1:48 scale for which I would pay full boat no matter how big the boat:p. Another satisifed customer! Thank you @Model Shipways! Please make the Susquehanna for me:)

Chuck,

FYI --- https://shipmodeler.wordpress.com/tag/uss-susquehanna/

Woody Joe kits are known to be very good - as you certainly know.

AND La Realle Thumbsupalways admired builders who built this stunning ship. That one might certainly be needed

PS: I have a question --

Thanks....

John! Thanks for the Woody Joe heads-up! I know about that kit and the quality. I haven't gone that direction because of the scale. I am trying to keep my bath tub toys in a certain range 1:48, 1:50, 1:96, 1:100. Given the galley kits I have and the one I have lust for (none of which are in those scales) it really should not matter, but it does. Like many things, I'll get over it sooner or later ROTF

As to the boats for L'Orenoque:

The bateuax-tambours. My first effort was based on measurements from the plans. As a result (me bad math) I had to carve a second buck to match the actual dimensions of the sponsons I made. The dimensions of my buck are 85 mm L, 31 mm W, 9.5 mm H. As you know I planked with grocery bag paper.

As to the other 5 boats - My Plan B is carving them using the 1:100 scale plans from the L'Aigle plan set I bought from ANCRE. For that reason, they will all be solid and covered as with the boat on the stern davits. Probably. I may also check on an after market example so that I can show one or two of the port side boats uncovered in whole or in part. My concern there is showing the weight of the boats which is hard to do, at least for me, unless they are fully stowed with the gripes snugged down.

Blessings. Peace. Gratitude.

Duly noted, sir! I'll take that to the higher authorities. ;)

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. Still questionable territory for me - I'll make further mental notations as I continue learning from your log. All still TBD

One OTHER issue, per your log, has to do with the smokestack - yea looking at online images of the kit's contents -- what has been included looks, indeed, very grim.

When the kit arrives my current thoughts won't be abstract. Bashing much of this ship will be fun, as you are also doing. The amount of tossing out will need to be determined. So far certainly those five lifeboats, and the funnel.........

Oh! Found your Harriet Lane log - next on my list - You are indeed right she makes a great looking ship - with "a bit" of your extra work!!

Regards,

I'm even further back and trying hard to not "peek" too much! :p A beautiful model and fantastic build, Chuck! Explosion
Bill! Thank you for looking at my log and for the very kind compliments! I hope you are having some happy modeling time this summer!

Blessings. Peace. Gratitude.
