Kunstvolle Modelle

Lieber Holger,

Ab

A beautiful model! I like the fine sheer of the hull and the perfect use of wood.
What did you use as a source? Chapman?
I suppose the run of the planking in the bow is hypothetical? Of course we know very little of the ways it was done, but the impression is that mostly the bottom planks ran parallel up to where the bilge strakes cut them off on their way to the stem. Cheap and efficient.
You might win some more points with the looks of the sails. The risk of trying to get too much detail in them is that the natural looks of canvas in the wind slightly loses it. But that is just a personal opinion. If this satisfies you, don't bother at all.
We're all in it for the joy of building.

Beautiful once again!

Maybe you should start a thread about it or write a build log. I’m sure many members would be interested in your methods.

Thank you very much, Ab, for your kind words. I’m sure I’ll do just that. I hope you can now read the message in English. Best regards, Holger.” I’d be happy to help you in English, German, or whatever language you prefer. What would you like to do next? I can help you write an email, summarize texts, or answer questions in English. Let me know how I can help you! I hope you can now read the message in English. Best regards, Holger

Dear Ab, I’m sorry I’m writing to you in German. I’ve only had a computer for a few years and have often had to improvise.
I just really miss those days. I promise to do better. In a few days, a young person is coming over to show me how to use Google Translate! Then we should be able to communicate in English.

It’s a cutter with an iron hull and screw propulsion that I completely rebuilt back then. Among other things, I used a book by Horst Mentzel—*Schmacken, Kuffen, and Galiots*—as a reference.

If I recall correctly, this model now represents a Newport Dundee-rigged cutter, which was manufactured specifically in Belgium for coastal freight transport. In England, the staunch conservatives long resisted using these types of ships.
However, the Dundee Rigg Cutter eventually gained acceptance over the years and went on to sail successfully in England and Scotland. It proved to be very reliable during the period from around 1880 to 1930.

For presentation purposes, I had this large background image made back then. I depicted the water using paper towels, which I had previously dyed with coffee and water. The title of this project is “Homecomer.” Dear Ab, I’m following the discussions here in the forum with great interest and ask once again for your understanding. My post in English will be available for you members to read shortly.

Great, Holger, everything’s in line with the forum rules. :)
Moderator Maarten will help you start your own thread shortly.
Kudos on your work!

Ab

Hi Ab, I’m really relieved that we’ve cleared things up. That’s incredibly important. I didn’t want to be the last one here—let alone upset anyone.
The ship models you’ve built, despite your age-related health issues, are truly impressive to me.

I have advanced osteoarthritis in both hands and often experience a slight tremor. That also makes it difficult for me to work on my projects.
Nevertheless, I hope to continue enjoying this art form—building historical models—for a long time to come.

If you’d prefer it, Ab, I’ll delete the photos of my models that I posted on your page. I hope you have a wonderful evening.

See you soon, Holger

In diesem Sinne viel Spaß im Ships of Scale Forum.

That's great to hear.
The best thing to do is use DeepL for translation—it's free, and you can set it up so that translations happen with the click of a button.
It works the other way around, too: you can write in German right here in the forum, and with the click of a button, it's in English.
The standard version of this translator is free.
DeepL also translates better than any other program.

In any case, your work is outstanding

The reason for joining a forum like this is to share something with others and one would think that the person posting would like to have as many readers as possible. If not, why post? While an International forum, policy is that posts are to be in English so members have reason to believe that they will be in that language.

In my case, I usually don’t bother to log on to these posts as I can’t read them and the same is probably true for others. Posting in a language other than English may or may not be rude but it is self defeating.

Roger

Dear Roger, there are also reasons and obstacles that, upon closer examination, deserve some leniency. I could only apologize, and I had also openly explained the reasons.
I have set this issue aside for now and will address it later in my reports. I believe this means I am complying with the forum rules.

Best regards, Holger Schwarz
