HMS Bellona Corel 1:100

From the treatise by John Muller in 1768 the side pieces (brackets) for an 18 pounder were 69 inches long and 5 inches thick. There are drawings of the 1760 carriage from Adye that was drawn in 1766 on page 377 of Volume II of Caruana's The History of English Sea Ordnance for a 24 pounder and the length matches the chart below so I am pretty sure this chart is a good one to use. With the exception of a different design of the cap square, it is very similar to the 1732 pattern carriage. Do you have drawings based on contemporary sources of the 1732 or 1760 carriage?

What surprises me is that the carriages appear to be the same length for any barrel length of the same caliber. Maybe someone else has another contemporary chart with more information.

Muller chart from 1768

The below is a chart from 1775. The dimensions are slightly different but the Muller chart above is about the time of Bellona so maybe the best one to use.

Hi Allan!
Thank you for such detailed information! Now I see that you shouldn’t always trust artificial intelligence! According to the table you provided, the carriage length for an 18‑pounder gun in 1:100 scale should be 17 mm. I don’t want to use the carriages from the kit because they look too rough. Besides, their length is 19 mm.
I’ve already mounted the guns on those kit carriages under the quarterdeck — they’re barely visible there. But on the open deck space, I’d like to use commercially available kit carriages. The problem is, their lengths are either 16 mm or 22 mm. I was thinking of using the 22 mm ones, but now I see that’s too much. I’ll use the 16 mm ones on the forecastle and quarterdeck for the 9‑pounder guns.
Anyway, I’m still thinking about the best way to proceed…
Best regards,
FriCap

If you cannot make your own, it may be better if you used the chart from 1775. If you do use that chart the brackets should be (63.11/ 100) X 25.4= 16.027mm
so your 16mm brackets should be perfect.

For the shape and fitting of the carriage, the below may be helpful. It is the carriage drawing of the 1760 pattern for a 24 pounder. It is from Volume 2, page 377 of The History of English Sea Ordnance by Adrian Caruana using measurements recorded by S. P. Ayde in 1766.

Hi everyone!

I’ve started working on the boats. They’re not included in the Corel kit, so I’m using what I could find. I’d like to make five boats — or at least three that will fit on the lower tier. These will be a longboat, a large pinnace, and a large cutter.

Шлюпки.jpg
For the large pinnace, I’m using a half‑barcas from the 12 Apostles kit (by the Russian company Falcone). It’s a decent match in terms of size, but it’s a bit wider than Bellona’s large pinnace — 25 mm versus 20 mm. At first, I thought I could ignore this difference, but after assembling the template, I decided to adjust the width of the frames.

IMG_20251013_072657.jpg
Trimming the frames directly on the template isn’t very convenient — it would’ve been easier to do that on the original veneer sheet. I also had to trim the grooves where the frame branches fit; there was no other way to do it on the template.

IMG_20260704_142434.jpg
So I glued small pieces of strip wood into those grooves. On top of that, I didn’t read the instructions carefully and didn’t secure the frames with glue in those grooves. As a result, the sides moved apart a little when I removed the hull from the template.

IMG_20260704_193508.jpgIMG_20260704_193530.jpgIMG_20260704_193558.jpgIMG_20260704_193652.jpgIMG_20260704_193807.jpgIMG_20260705_003755.jpg

I plan to correct this by adjusting the width of the thwarts — I need to reduce them anyway. We’ll see how it looks after I finish the adjustments.

Hi everyone! I’ve almost finished working on the large pinnace. All that’s left to do is to make the rudder, the rowlocks, paint the boat, and rig it with oars, masts, and everything else it needs.

I still haven’t decided how to make the rowlocks for the boat. The kit suggests simply leaving gaps in the bulwark — there are corresponding slots in the gunwale for that. It’s the easiest option. But I’m using a kit designed for a Russian boat, while this is an English ship. Although, looking at modern photos of the Victory’s boats, the system is the same. What do the experts think?
For now, I’ll put the large pinnace aside and get to work on the longboat.

What the hell is this? Where did you get this monster, my friend? Whose dark genius designed this kit? It's clearly not Corel. We can all see, right? The side thickness here is equal to that of a good, well-built ship? That won't do. You'll ruin a perfectly good model with those ugly boats.
= What a polite, constructive criticism.
Gr. Peter

PS: Sorry for letting myself go for a moment .....Sick And sorry for disrupting your log ………
Regards, Peter

You made some very nice little boats, ‘Frecap’.:)

Beste Peter!

Funny, I sensed friendly irony/sarcasm in the translator. I had a feeling you weren't being rude or mean.

For the other members of this international SoS, the translation:
Dear Peter! I have decided not to translate the words I addressed to my friend into English. We often joke with each other, but a translation into English would lose all the nuances. Some might think we are arguing. After all, Russian model builders are all friends and always understand irony, humor, or sarcasm. Of course, I greatly appreciate my friend's work and sincerely hope that he builds the best model in the world! On the other hand, I have provided images that, even without translation, convey what I would wish for a friend.
