On this forum I found a wonderful plan set review of LE FLEURON 64-gun Ship by Joseph & Blaise OLLIVIER – 1729 by Gerard Delacroix and Jean Boudriot

https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...9-by-gerard-delacroix-and-jean-boudriot.2885/

Almost convinced me to commit to build that ship. However, I always wanted to build Hms Victory but I’m looking to get a very good planset as detailed as Le Fleuron one.

I consider buying this book: H.M.S. Victory. Building, restoration & repair 1966

However, would someone be able to confirm if those 2 volumes be everything, I need to build the model, I want to build it in 1:50 scale preferably.

All I heard is that it is incredibly good book, but I couldn’t find any satisfactory description of it and of what it contains.

I understand that this book obviously is about building and restoration of the Nelson’s ship. However, does it contain plans, pictures sufficient to build the model or it is more like supplementary position treating about history of the ship so I still would need to acquire the plans elsewhere?

Hallo Miroslaw,
First of all many thanks for the kind words about my Plaset Review of the Le Fleuron I made. This ia my intention to give the members an overview and a detailed information about the Content of the Books and Plansets - Happy, that it was helping for a decision to buy or not to buy.

Related to the book written by Arthur Bugler, which I have also in my library. It is a two volume book. One text book and one volume with drawings. I was stuying this book years ago, but will take in the next days once more a detailed look on it.
I can offer you, that I will make as soon as possible a detailed review of this book and will post it here in SOS.......Hope this will help to make your final decision.

Thank you zoly99sask and Uwek for your replies.

I had a look through the Anatomy of the Ship The 100-Gun Ship Victory by John Mckay

I also checked out Alex’s HMS Victory, beautiful model it is, and I am looking/aiming to build something like that.

I am not sure what zoly99sask means by saying that I need to decide what part I want to build…

I think to build the whole ship in scale 1:50 (actually the appealing range is more like 1:48 – 1:70) Starting with hull and finishing with rigging and sails.

Uwek: your offer to post a review is indeed very generous and I will be grateful for a brief description what I can expect from that book not mentioning a detailed one, that would be even better.

If I could add few words about myself…
Model building was my youth passion I was spending all my free time making models. When I was finishing my high school over 40 years ago, I was building HMS Victory in 1:50 scale. I had to stop because of exams and work so it stopped after I completed the hull. Unfortunately, later the model was stolen.

Throughout the years I didn’t have many occasions to build any model. The last time was almost 20 years ago when I had time off work, I built USS Constitution but because of limited time it was from plastic kit. Now I don’t work anymore so finally I have time to commit to an advanced long term project.

I apologize for horrible image quality but clicking on the link you should be able to view those photographs of my USS Constitution. I would upload better images, but the model is in my house in Poland and I don’t live in Poland now.

I write about all of this because I have experience with long projects (HMS Victory 40 years ago for example) as well as wood works of different kinds, (therefore I believe that I have most of the necessary tools). Because I’m coming back to the subject of model making after so long, I feel a bit lost especially because all the books about model making I had, were in polish and left in Poland.

I need to gather some good plans and reference books that will allow me to construct detailed ship. Because the project will take most likely over 3000 hours, I translate it for 3-6 years.
I need to know if the 2-volume book include the plans or maybe where could I buy some good plans. The plans can make the building process difficult and tedious or much simpler if everything on them was already to scale.

Thanks Uwek...I just found and bought a copy of H.M.S. Victory. Building, restoration & repair on eBay UK. Great price and the guy has excellent feedback ratings. Should arrive here in the middle of August. Thanks for your review. Price including shipping was under $260. Beats the other prices I found... $750 on Amazon and $350 plus shipping on Abe Books.

Miroslaw,
The photos of the plastic Constitution you built, are the sails cloth? If so, how did you make them! Last two pictures are fantastic!

Make sure you bought both volumes 1 and 2, because this price is too low.
