Mantua Sergal President frigate 1:60 build log.

The story so far. Painted hull.D39F4141-1DBA-46AA-A516-7740C5A38F5F.jpeg

Decided to tackle modifying the cannons to look more like cannons, the one on the left is how they are supplied ,which I think is a carronade (and doesn’t fit the year of ship), the one on the right I have shortened to look like an Armstrong pattern, Next I plan to make trunnions and carriages.CD76E0A1-E22E-4C7A-A40F-6BF8613EC0E1.jpeg

The story so far, now building masts, lots of laser cut parts with bad cut edges, they all seem to be tapered ie about 10 degrees off of 90, buy the time I've sanded them square they are over a millimetre smaller which doesn't sound like much, but they are only around 4mm to begin with. 15716696842738877333489443730302.jpg

This is my first kit build and first build log. Until now I’ve only built ships in bottles but fancied something bigger but not too complex. The detail on this kit seems quite basic or rather lacking in places, but I suppose you get what you pay for at this level, so I will add a few embellishments here and there.
So far I’ve only got the frame assembled as a lot of the pieces were warped and had to be steamed to straighten, then a lot of swearing as the pieces were insanely tight to fit. Just started to shape the sides to get rid of the sharp corners, then my first attempt at planking!View attachment 79974

Interested to see your build progress. I'm currently at this stage with an older kit Mantua model, the Cutty Sark (1:78) My second build. Not impressed with Mantua's plans and instructions, after having built an Artesania Latina Clipper (Harvey/ 1847) with excellent instructions.

Yes, I agree, they aren’t the best are they. I have one set of plans and a printed colour booklet set, neither accurately correspond to each other and neither accurately correspond to the actual model! They leave a lot to the imagination, quite honestly, if it wasn’t for the internet and this forum then I would of been in a whole lot of more trouble than I have been. I’ve even had to redrill all 3mast holes to fit them as they were between 5 and 7mm out of line and perpendicular. But, I’ve learnt how NOt to build a kit so alls good. The rigging on the other hand is going to be a bit of a mission,as the pictures are very vague and in some cases to close to see either end of the lines. Also very basic, and I don’t want it to look inaccurate, so i will have to do my homework.

I now have all three masts fitted, although the booklet shows one fitted and then rigged, but I got impatient! Good thing or bad thing? Oh well too late, there glued in! Just need painting, I was planning on leaving these as wood but the different bits don’t look to pretty so will paint.8DA7504B-5A3E-44DB-91C6-22927CE777AB.jpeg

Provided rigging in kits is very often really poor.
However it is rather easy to expand the rigging to better suit the model and there are some good books you can use to do this. Rigging was quite standard and can be copied across as long you are in the correct period of time.

See below a link to the book review section with a nice and not expensive book you can use for this.
