    Tools for rigging

Hi, Hugh: The photo shows some tools that may be unorthodox, but I've used with some success. locking tweezers to hold blocks while finishing them. Plastic dental flossing gizmos for threading blocks. Home-made u-shape for manipulating line - "u" is a needle cut off through the eye and mounted...

THE MASTING AND RIGGING OF ENGLISH SHIPS OF WAR 1625-1860 By James Lees

George Biddlecombe's The Art of Rigging also has definitions of terms and some illustrations. The book is a Dover soft cover and mine cost $11.This book, along with the others mentioned above, may be used to cross-reference any terms. I found having two or three different definitions can clarify...

Cheap Chinese Halcon speed build [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hi, What a nice start! You're turning a $12 kit into a really serious build. But you have probably agree with me about the plans/instructions . They leave a lot to be desired. Since I’m also building the original Harvey by Artisima Latina, I was able to second-guess some things. One problem...

Discussion Can You Ever Have Too Many Scale Modeling Tools?

This may sound morbid, but as a member of a ship modeling club mostly populated by older guys who die, and whose relatives want to get rid of their tools, kits, supplies and books, I've acquired lots of duplicate and triplicate stuff because they were cheap. I've acquired 9 sets of mini files, 7...

    Personal lumberyards / extra stock

I have three kit boxes full of strips, boards and dowels. And being something of a hoarder, I also save scraps in no particular order. Here they are ready to rumage through whenever I need something. I rarely find what I need. But I still fil up small boxes with scraps 'cause you never know

    Rigging clamps

Here are samples of my mini-clamp collection. The white and the red/clear one are found in a sewing accessory store. I find the blue-handed one too hard-gripping for most modeling. I only use them for "hanging" line. I'm of the opinion that you can't have too many clamps.

    Plank Clips

I, too, use these clips - But I glue in small strips of wood of various lengths instead of the odd"handles". There are times a short one works better and some times a longer one does.

    Patrick O'Brian Books

Unless you want to read them more than once, you can do as I did - borrow them from our metropolitan (Denver) library system. I borrowed them three at a time. They were sent to my local library for convenience. At least four libraries were involved. These words from a guy who would spend my...

Running rigging, plans and what am I missing?

I've built the Charles B Morgan Scientific Model without sails.. I too purchased the Model Shipways plans and found them helpful. Without sails, and because of the small scale,I only rigged halyards, hauls, clews, lifts and braces. I found 2mm single blocks, 3mm double blocks. And I also...

    CA Glue bottle clogging

I also use the long tips and snip occasionally. I also find that by banging the container on the workbench a couple of times after each application, the glue will retreat into the container. That helps.
