1:24 Pearwood French Longboat from Unicorn Model

Whatever happened there, animals and children are not allowed in workshop.
I don't have experience with animals, but i do with children.
It's usually a quick process. So...
1. Opening of visit
2. Don't touch my stuff
3. Don't touch my stuff
4. This is sharp, you'll cut yourself
5. Don't touch my stuff
6. You'll cut off your finger
7. Don't touch my stuff
8. Blood
9. Blood
10. End of visit...

And a week of rest until the next visit...

Oh gee … i remember that, but I got no more children to worry about. Nowadays, my tools are always right where I left em. So, it’s just the cats. And they’re trainable, more or less.

That reminds me - our 20 month old great grandson is coming tomorrow to stay for 3 days. Time to put things up. ROTF

Just finished adding the main and rear stern gunwales railings. So the hull is basically done. Now for the lockers cabinets, etc. And then the rigging - which I'm really looking fwd to - as this will be my first model with sails.

Some pics, followed by a description of the issue I had while mounting the rear gunwales.

First thing I did was put the rear railing plate on the hull and the widgets that go under it - I think they're for handling rope.

Then, while dry fitting the two top rear railings to the Z shaped railing conns and the rear railing plate - I saw that the hull planking bulged out past the edges of the two rear railings - about 3mm the one side, and 1mm the other - so I glued em at their ends first - then I got a big clamp, and gently brought in the hull planking so it was under the railings - then I CA-'d those railings to the hull - first the 1mm side, then after resecuring the clamp, I brought in the other side and glued it down too.

I was relieved not to hear any cracking sounds while I brought the two sides of the hull in under the railings. Was a big clamp. They weren't fighting it. Seemed happy to come in under the railings - where they belonged.

I finished the stern lockers and mounted the rear and bow rope rollers.

The lockers in this kit are only suggestions - as they're not completely enclosed, nor do they have any visible access. I will likely put hinges on the lids of the side lockers - to address that.

I used white glue to mount the stern rope roller - as when I tried to hold it in place to apply CA, it just wanted to slide all over the place. Where the white glue provided positioning tack and peace of mind.

And - I should start blacking some of this brass. Gonna be messy, trying to black it in place - as it will soak into the surrounding wood. But, this just keeps on slipping my mind.

Pics of rope rollers and stern lockers.

This morning, I started work on the oar lock mounts that attach to the main gunwale.
  • These are little flat pieces of wood into which the oarlock pegs are inserted.
  • They need to be sanded round on the top sides - because they'd be worn that way - by constant abuse from the oars.
  • I'll place em with a dab of white glue - so they have enough tack that I can position them properly.

We are in the middle of moving from the US to Spain....moving the furry horde (and our Labrador) is a major logistical hurdle! ROTF

I finally blacked all of my metal bits.

Both masts were cut to length, tapered and had their bottoms cut square to fit the holes in the steps.

The rudder and tiller have been shaped.

And I shaped the fwd mast mount, and glued it to the gunwales. There was no way to clamp it to the hull, while i positioned the removable metal clamps ... so i glued it - before adding the fwd mast mount clamps - they'll be just decorative on this ship.

The two masts will not be glued in. And the mast steps haven't yet been glued to the keel - my strategy is to clamp the masts into their mounting cradles - then position them vertically - and only then add a couple drops of CA- between the steps and the keel. And I'll two have properly positioned, yet removable, masts.

So, next, after i finish the fwd mast mounts ... I make the rudder hinges and mount the rudder. After that, i dismount the masts, and add the blocks and top poles to em (while keeping everything in line), then mount the masts back into the hull, and finish all the rigging. Can't wait.

Dry fitting the fwd mast clamping cradle to the fwd mast mount.

A small tray of parts I'm working on - I do this so I don't lose em.

More bits, just another work in progress pic ...

Closeup ... metal needs to be nailed to mast mount, which needs clamps and cannon mounts too.

So, I just finished my first helping of crow (for today, anyway). ROTF If you remember from an earlier post, I was quite skeptical about whether you would be able to recover from the CA glue stains on your floor, but I have to say, you have done an admirable job and your model looks fantastic!

Well, I have also helped myself to some crow, from time to time. Anyway, thanks.

I finished stepping the masts. First, I made a balsa T square, and laid it across the gunwales just in front of the main mast, and set the main mast to left/right vertical by aligning it to the T square. Here's a pic of the rig ...
IMG_5873.jpeg

Then with the main mast set, I used the it to set the foremast left/right vertical. After setting a mast properly, I would CA- the mast's step to the keel. Note that I judged the vertical fore and aft pitch by eyeball. A pic of what I was seeing as I set the foremast left/right to vertical.

And from the front ...
IMG_5867.jpeg

And I'd take a look at the side view too, to make sure my fore/aft was close enough to vertical, before gluing steps to keel.

Best part is that after gluing the steps in, I dismounted and remounted the masts ... and they were still true. All pics were after the gluing and remounting.

The masts have square ends that seat in the steps.

Rudder next. Then complete the masts and booms. Next sand, stain and touchup as needed. And lastly the rigging and sails.
