1/30 HMS Royal Caroline Build

One of the things I love about a website like SoS is that it provides a chance for a new learning experience every day. The use of gammoning lashing or rack blocks varied. Those ships that had them averaged 6 single sheaves in each according to James Lees in The Masting and Rigging of English Ships of War on page 167. He does not mention anything about what size ships had them or what era they covered. The photo below is from Lees book of Leda.

His book is so full of useful information and a gold mine for any model ship builder of period ships!!!

Hello everyone,
Been a little slow going but wanted to give a quick update. I started working on the lower main mast, mast cheeks, side & front Fish, six metal mast bands and the 6 Woolding grooves cut out & shaped accordingly.
As I previously mentioned in a earlier posting, some of the plans that came with the kit are not scaled correctly. I believe the manufacture just scanned & printed out copies without double checking. This issue causes a HUGE headache because they are not a true 1 to1 copy that you can use. The printout for the Topmast is way to big compared to the drawing on the large Sail Plan. OVERSIZE DRAWINGS

Good evening Rick. Quality work. Cheers Grant

Hi Modelshipbuilder65
Your work is SO good I hate to ask this of you. Can you explain the purpose of the grooves in the cheeks and front fish? This would substantially weaken them so it is hard to understand why this is done. I looked at Lees, Anderson, Antscherl, and Steel and cannot find anything that mentions the cheeks or front fish being grooved like this. I thought it might be for the wooldings but I am guessing one or more of the sources mentioned would have described this and every contemporary model I studied has the wooldings and hoops standing proud of the cheeks and front fish as there are no grooves.
Thanks!
Allan

WIP----
Hello everyone. Got started on the Bowsprit. I completed the needed 6 Iron bands for the rope wooldings. I decided to make all the ships bands in Iron since I will be showing the ship in the approx. 1800 time period. I used 18 gauge square copper (1mm squared) that was blackened. I also completed the Flying Jibboom Iron strap out of a leftover brass piece I had laying around. Next is the saddles, cleats and the Bowsprit Topmast Knee before painting the front section Black and sealing everything before completing the rope wooldings.
Onwards we go................................................

G'day Rick, where did you get the information to use iron band's with the rope wooldings inside them,
Best regards John,

G'day Rick, it does look like some of your plans are out of scale, maybe I can help a bit, I dug out my mast plans and here are some comparisons that might be able to help you make a decision,

This is my main top mast plan laid next to the full rigging drawing and as you can see there is definitely a difference to yours, mine fits exactly,

20241119_125938.jpg
and this is the made up mast sitting over the full rigging plan, nearly exact,

this is the main top mast and this fits the wooden parts supplied in the kit, so hopefully if the parts supplied in your kit match this, then you should know which plan is wrong, hope this is helpful, is it only the main top mast that is different, if you need any more measurements from my kit or plans just ask,

best regards John,
