18th Century Longboat Model Expo 1:48

Sorry for the long delay, I had some great vacations on a Mediterranean cruise and some time in Tucson. Back to the model. After finishing the fore stay, the jib sail halyard and the stay sail halyard were done next. Two 3/32" smaller blocks were stropped with a hook made of the 28 gauge wire.

I also made a traveler ring for the bowsprit out of the 28 gauge wire and it was silver soldered.

The stay sail halyard was then seized to the mast around the top of the fore stay. The other end was then threaded through one of the blocks and the hook of the block attached to the dead eye on the bow.

The line was then brought up to the middle sheave on the mast and threaded to one of the belaying pins.

Well, Rob, I have followed your build log all alone, and I can see you grasp your skills and experience. I am sure, in your next model you should have more confidence. There are some 'touch ups' I would do prior to making a final 'Done'. Maybe you can straighten chainplates?

Anyway... Whether you accept some modifications or not - Congratulations! Good job!

I noticed there are no thole pins which brings up a question. Would they be removed when under sail? Those that were more common later on had shoulders and were nailed in place so would be permanent, but when simple pins were used, would they be kept secured in place or removed?

Good question, I know no thole pins were included in the model but they do include them in the 1:24 model. It may be they are too fragile at 1:48th scale. I should add that they did include a grappling hook in the kit, but I managed to melt it when I was trying silver solder on it.
