A new carving project - a lion figurehead of the ship la Belle Poule

good evening dear friends
This afternoon I returned from a fun vacation in Jerusalem with my wife for her birthday. I will attach a photo of the famous tower of the YMCA building illuminated at night.

In the evening, I was free to continue the carving work on the lion. as you remember, the focus this time is on the hind legs, which the figure is standing on. I dedicated the first hour to sharpening the chisels. It is important to say that the sharpening of small chisels is more complex than the large ones and requires delicacy and precision.

After the chisels were sharpened and tested on a piece of wood, I proceeded to study the lion's anatomical structure from the waist down to the feet. For this I used the lion doll I bought.

I began to carve and deepen the contours of the waist, thighs and calves. In the latest update you can see that they are straight at almost 90 degrees. Today they began to receive their anatomical configuration (rounded slopes) and also in the area of the joints the angles reached the required degree. Of course I looked at the drawing of the figure on the ship and in the monograph.
As I write in every update, I still have a lot of work left, among other things I have not yet touched the feet themselves. The beauty of carving in boxwood with properly sharpened chisels, is that the wood gets a smooth and beautiful texture almost like marble. And what's more beautiful is to observe the tiny, rounded wood shavings.
I'll let you get an impression of the photos .

I wish us all a pleasant and enjoyable weekend

Good evening friends

finally after few days of break from the Creation/carving, today I found a little time to continue the work on the lion.

I continued to carve the area of the rear legs and even cut off the legs from the block of wood from which the creation of the lion figure began and even formed the basis of the figure until now.

good night :)20220907_213609.jpg20220907_213603.jpg

good evening dear friends In the last two days I worked many hours on the lion figure to bring it to the finish line. The main steps and areas I focused on and worked on were: the connection area of the lion's tail to the buttocks. Deepening the proportions of the hips and calves Creating the hind legs together with the lion's claws. After that, I worked for many hours on the lion's face on the different parts that make it up: jaws, chin, nose to the area of the lion's eyes, mouth and fangs, from the eyebrows to the forehead and all the adjustments and proportions between them. I aligned and attached the crown to the lion's head and finally applied a layer of beeswax/natural dung.
In conclusion, I can say that this was both a challenging and fun project, through which I was able to maintain and develop carving skills. With all the necessary modesty, I can say that I am satisfied with the result and the way I went/carved. I hope you enjoy this journey too, your support has given me strength and faith

Real nice work for your first lion. Most important with these small project are that you learn how to handle your tools, how wood react, what is possible and what not. You will get better and better in carving after each project you make. For me there is also a lot to learn in this part of the hobby. You make me think about starting to make a ornament, just for fun, between all the other things I do.
Go on. What's the next you gonna try to make?

Great job Shota, your diligent efforts have really paid off.
Superb. Obvious talent. Another few carvings and you'll be teaching a master class
I stand with what I said before; you're a brave man, Shota. And it's paying dividends.
