Hello all. I just started building the Heller 1/100 HMS Victory. It isn't my first model. I've completed 3 of Revell's 1/96 classics: Consitution, United States and Cutty Sark. I've built and rigged most of the other smaller plastic classics: Golden Hind, Mayflower, Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria, the Pirate Ship, even the WASA. I'm reasonably skilled but the instructions and diagrams from Heller are giving me heartburn. It is very difficult to see, let alone interpret the start and end points of the lines. I have a copy of The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships with rigging diagrams for Victory. Although that shows the rigging plan, it doesn't help much in locating lines on the model. I have the rigging plans for Constitution (and United States) which can help somewhat even though they are a different class of ship from Victory. I'm hoping that somebody can point me to an improved set of rigging instructions: something with clearer drawings and perhaps sequential instructions. If there is an improved set of general build instructions I would be interested in those also. I'm struggling through the Heller instructions now and making slow progress. I'm spending way more time studying the instructions than actually building the model.

I will appreciate any help.

regards,

Vic

A warm welcome here on board of our forum.
The HMS Victory is maybe the most often build or purchased ship model, so I am pretty sure, that some members will be able to help and give hints about the rigging details.
One of the real specialists about the Victory is our member Daniel alias @dafi who is building also the Heller Victory - maybe he can give a hint where to find the best informations.

Hi again. Thanks to those of you who have sent references to help me on my search for better HMS Victory instructions. I'm following up. I'm still learning to navigate this system though so my access is slow. I want to say though, that when I see the photos of the work many of you are doing I'm floored. The mechanical ingenuity and the quality of the models is astounding. Veejay

Hello Veejay

I recently purchased

The Rigging of Period Ship Models. A Step-by-Step Guide to the Intricacies of Square-Rig by Lennarth Petersson_

Here are instructions in a simple way, not specific to the Victory, but I think you can do a lot with this

I saw this book review at:

Good tip!
we have also a detailed book review of this informative publication here in our forum

Go to this link - it is DeAgonstini Model Space Website of a large VIctory. This link carries you to their 12 part instruction manual. Even though you do not need the manual for the main construction. I would think that parts 10, 11, and 12 should have a detailed rigging plan.

Hi, in addition to Donnie’s link try YouTube search for Official HMS Victory Build Diary which contains 63 videos of the full construction of the DeAgostini kit - I found it very helpful when building my own Victory kit.
Best of luck

Hello Vic,

I think that AOTS and Petersson are a good base. Still of interest is James Lees "The Masting and Rigging of English Ships of War, 1625-1860 (Conway's History of Sail)"

Than you should a good base :)

All the best, Daniel

Excellent instructions, easy to understand, clear photos and useful tips which can be applied to many other ships
