Black Pearl - Zhl 1:50 by Vfordyce [COMPLETED BUILD]

Now I’m bending the little strips of brass to fit around the brass rod, keel, and stern for the rudder. It seems like a late stage to cut the rectangular hole for the rudder to fit in. I have to turn the ship upside down while the mast is sticking between my legs. Tricky. Then I had to fiddle with the brass piece to shape it. Finally, I got to look for all the belaying pins that fell on the carpet when I had the ship upside down. I think I’ll wait until I need the belaying pins before I reinstall them. Hmm. Your observations about timing of the rudder has me thinking - always a dangerous proposition for me - but you do raise an interesting issue...

I just caught up on this build. Nice work. Ratlines look great. I hear your pain of the dreaded carpet searching. Last Summer I spent hours looking for a small part only to give up. 6 weeks later while looking for another part I found it right by my feet. I swear a model Leprechaun was playing pranks on me. I then moved my shipyard off the carpet.

I bought an office chair mat. I’m afraid to vacuum so I can lay it down. Hopefully that will help. By the way, the hardest to find in the carpet is tiny deadeyes!

Of course, they made it out of squished fireflies. I drove through a cloud of fireflies at night and they lit up when they hit the windshield, turning on the wipers kept reactivating the chemicals, weird and awesome at the same time. My kids were 6 & 8 at the time. They thought is was amazing.

Hi I have just caught up with your log I'm amazed at how fast your build is going. I am building the golden edition BP and have noticed there is a big difference in the profile at the front of the hull.
Yep. But some of the picture directions are of the golden. They don’t fit.

I can’t top that one! Maybe jellyfish?

Do y’all like my upside down transom bling? I’m going to look more closely at the directions next time. I keep saying that.... I’m afraid taking it off will do too much damage. No one but y’all will ever notice.
I like it better that way. Looks more swashbuckling!
Thanks, Doc! I just discovered that the picture was of a different edition of the Pearl. When I looked at the final of the completed ship of my edition, I found the side lanterns were on the side bulwarks. My next build will probably take years, not 4 months.

That's hilarious! ROTF

Visiting your build after a week(s) or so is always a pleasant surprise.
The blue trim you added to the BP looks great.
Rudder Thumbs-Up

I almost open my BP yesterday, I am so anxious to start.
Unfortunately a security system I ordered came in, so that's my next project.

Till next visit, keep up the good work.

Looking forward to your build!

I had a heck of a time with the figurehead. She wouldn’t fit over the hump that could help hold her up because of the bowsprit. So I brought her down further just a tad. Super glue wouldn’t hold her. I tried epoxy but it wouldn’t set. Finally, I filled it with construction cement and held it on with tape. Now she’s set!0C18EE6A-43C9-44E0-B230-D050CC2D65DB.jpeg
