Bluenose II, 1:75 Artesania-Latina kit build by Dom.

What is the best way to drill the slotted holes for the scuppers? Is it best to just try to drill multiple holes close together? It doesn't seem to work all that well.

That is the way most people do it. They then use a file to smooth the rough edges and turn it into a slot. If you have a smooth hand you could drill one hole, then switch to a side cutting end mill and try your hand at cutting it with that. I'd practice on some scrap wood before trying it on the model. Make sure and wear eye protection.

Thank you for confirming that. I will continue doing it as I have been.

Step 22 says: "Insert the eyebolt 51 in the centre of the stern deck 19 (keeping a 1.5 mm gap with
the frame 15)."

It seems like a hole needs to be drilled for that but there is no mention of that. Does a very tiny hole seem reasonable?

Step 24 says: "
Cut parts 58, 59 and 60 from the 1.5 x 2 mm and 1.5 x 3 mm walnut batten and
glue them into place. Dye and varnish them. Cut and glue the edging 61A, 61B
from the 1.5 x 1.5 mm basswood batten for the bow gunwale cover 53. Mask andScreenshot 2025-11-18 110840.png
pain the frames with the name of the ship at the bow 62 and stern 63 and glue
them into their respective places."

#59 is to be cut from 1.5 x 3mm. The photo shows a 1mm deep x 59mm wide notch in #59. I can't see what that notch is for. In fact I can't tell from the photos just how #59 is to be placed. Should it be on its edge or on its side? Where is the notch supposed to end up?

I do find that some of the photos in the instructions are next to useless!

It took me a while to work out what should be done, the instructions and pictures are not very helpful as you say!

Start with the stanchion uprights which are the small pieces that are glued on which come up from the rear deck 6mm and end 5mm below the top of the hull. Fit the short drilled out belaying pieces (57) so that they fit square on top of the stanchions with the front edge level with the step that drops to the main deck. Cut and neatly fit a piece of the 1.5x2mm strip so that it fits flat on top of the stanchion pieces with the front butting up flush with the belaying piece and the back fitting flush with the shaped stern piece (52) - the top surface off all the pieces should all be at the same level above the deck and about 3.5mm below the top of the hull. That completes the main rail.

Next, the pieces 59 are the hand rails which are made from the 1.5x3mm strip and sit on top of the hull. The picture is rubbish! The front should be at the step of the hull and the cut out is the outer side and starts 25mmm from the step. When you fit the rails to the hull they sit flat on top of the hull bulwarks with a small amount of overhang each side. The inner edge of the cut out should then be flush with the outer edge of the hull so that when you fit the strops they will sit flush onto the hull. The rear of the hand rail should then be trimmed down and a short piece of 1.5x2mm then sits on top of the stern to join everything together with a little bit of overhang either side so that it is nice and flush all the way round the hull.

I hope that helps. I remember that I had a lot of problems fitting everything so that it was nice and neat. The hardest part was fitting the top hand rail so that it had an even overhang all the way around the hull.

This is very helpful! I kind of thought that it should be something like that but boy oh boy, the instructions did NOT make that clear at all.

Thanks so much.

I think I abandoned the instructions not far into the build, they were so confusing! I mostly worked from looking at the images in Jenson's book, particularly when it came to the rigging because I wanted to rig the model as on the actual ship.

Happy modelling!

I cannot understand what this picture from step #31 is trying to tell me:

There seems to be nothing useful in the descriptive text.

Hi, it is a mooring line post used to tie on to. On the ship there are two posts either side of the ships wheel as you can see in the image. They are made from two pieces with the cross piece rebated into the upright post and then just glued onto the deck.
Dom.
