Buccaneer by Occre - First build ever

Toni, your work is beautiful !
As far as re-sizing a picture you are posting, once you have added the picture to your post, you can click on the picture and it will put 4 blocks on the corners of the pictures. You can click on any of these blocks and drag it to make the picture the size you want. This method will retain the same height to width ratio.

Regarding you finger stick dilemma if this is the result of CA acetone will dissolve the glue. If you already know this please forgive me. As an alternative to CA for the rigging may I suggest you use a fabric glue. It dries quickly, won't stain like CA, won't stick your fingers together and is a lot easier to clean up.

I like your work thus far!

Oh, Acetone makes sense. That would probably work a lot better than lotion, that's for sure. Thanks. I hope there's no next time but if there is I'll try that instead. And clean my scissors at the same time.

About the CA glue staining, yes, that's really been bothering me. The ropes darken when I use it on them and I just assumed it was "normal" when ship building. I will most definitely get some fabric glue. Is there any particular brand that I should look for? Or do they all basically work the same?

Not sure where you live so not sure where specifically to direct you to buy fabric glue. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby in the fabric and sewing section.

RE acetone- it will dry you skin so I recommend you use a good lotion/moisturizer after clean up.

I've learned so much while building this ship. I'm happy that I chose a Galleon, too. This has been such an incredible learning experience for me that, hopefully, because of all the intricacies involved with this ship, I'll do a much better job on my next build. One can always hope.
 
Our first ship is a HUGE learning experience. Funny thing is, we learn about all the things we want improve upon after the first ship is done, but we usually can't go back to that first model to correct them because rigging and other things are in the way. So,... we make ANOTHER model! :D And, that next model is much better than the first one, all due to the lessons we learn along the way.

Then onto the decorations. Instead of following Occre's instructions and gluing the supplied paper pattern directly onto the ship, I used very thin cherry veneer that I cut with a Chopper II tool so that the pieces all came out the same. I did have to custom fit here and there once I glued them onto the ship but I think they came out pretty good overall.

Next was "antiquing" the upper part of the ship with Judea de Bitumen. I didn't know what this stuff was...and kind of still don't...but I love it. It adds a slight tint to the 2nd planking that darkens it just slightly. Interesting how it works. That's it for now. I've been working on the masts and yards for a couple of days but haven't gotten very far yet. Lots of staining and sealing so lots of down time waiting for them to dry between coats.

I'm really loving this build but, wow, I had no idea the amount of work that goes into it. When I browse thru pics of all of your ships my eyes are wide open now and I am in complete awe of you all.

Your Buccaneer was looking great, but the Judea de Bitumen took it to another level. The slight darkening made a world of difference.

Ah, okay.

Those curves were a big pain in the butt for me. Mine got all crimped from the iron and then I had to sand down the crimps as best I could. I still wasn't happy in the end but what the heck.

Yours looks really good. As always, great idea on your part.

The Judea de Bitumen is really strange stuff. If you ever get some don't use it full strength. Water it down heavily first, brush it on, then rub it dry with a cloth. I absolutely love the stuff and can see great potential in the future when I use it again.

For my next build I'm going back to basics. I bought a beginners plank on bulkhead kit by Occre called The Albatros. Now that I have general idea of what's involved in building a ship I want to try and focus more heavily on each aspect of the build, i.e., planking, rigging, etc., and hopefully do a better job on this one. Just going to do the best I can to try and get better at this by really, really taking my time.

Yes, I'm going to dig in to The Albatros. I've got the pieces cut out and sitting there waiting for me to get started. I'm going to take your lead on this one and work carefully and methodically and spend a lot of time on attention to detail. Patience, Grasshopper! ;)

When I was building the Buccaneer and I got confused, I spent hours looking at whatever pics I could find on the web of other people's builds and Occre's videos. A lot of the time neither one of those helped me much. If you ever find yourself in that position don't hesitate to ask for close-up pics of whatever part of the ship you might want to have a better look at. I'm always happy to help if I can.

I'm impressed with your build. I especially like the rigging! Congrats on you efforts. I'm working on the rigging of my Santa Maria and hope that mine comes out as well as yours.
