I just worry too much. I’m only half way through Alert and here I go, already considering tactics for my Morgan in 2025. I’ll chill out and watch the show from now on.

I was trying not to be nosy but I failed. What are your next two builds likely to be?

(I have a five year plan which includes four kits, and will probably take ten years. Ha!)
 
You’re not being nosy at all. I am planning a scratch build of the Flying Cloud based on plans from Scott Bradner. I have been gathering information on the Flying Cloud for a while and I am planning to start cutting parts soon. I have also been looking at a monograph from ANCRE. I really like their plans, but I’m afraid my skills aren’t ready for that right now.

Double WOW! from me then. That’s one for the clipper and another for the scratching. My ambitions only lead as far as my somewhat terrifying Le Requin kit from ZHL for which, coincidentally, I have the ANCRE monograph as a guide. I’ll always stand aside to let a scratch builder pass, there’s far too much thinking involved in that hallowed aspect of the hobby.

Thanks Smithy and Grant. My goal has been to scratch build. I scratch built large scale r/c airplanes for many years, but the skills needed to scratch build ships is at another level. I hope to get to that level someday. I think I have found a ANCER monograph that I think I may be able to build. I am planning to build the Flying Cloud along side the Charles Morgan. My ADD makes it necessary to change focus a lot.

On reading that I thought, 'My goodness, two at once! I'd never do that.'

But on reflection it's not a bad idea for me too. I will definitely have difficulty maintaining interest in a long job like Le Requin, possibly for years. There would be a lot of repetitious working and I'd be starved of the satisfaction of finishing something. Another simpler, or simply different build, at a different stage of construction might be an efficient way to work. Hmmm. Thanks Bill, for that idea.
 
I'm going to start out with my first scratch build being a plank on bulkhead build. The way I look at it, the main construction difference between POB kit build and a POB scratch build are the bulkheads. In the kits I have built, other than the bulkheads, everything is scratch built anyway. In my thinking, the main difference is that in a scratch build, you don't a set of instructions to follow. This site is full of great people that are more than will to help you along the way if you get stuck.

Hello everyone,

Shaping the stern. I am not convinced of the shape of the stern. I have been trying to find a good profile picture of the stern, but have not found one yet. From the pictures and drawings I have seen, I am not convinced that the transom shape that is shown on the kit drawing is correct.

Thanks for the pictures. Your first picture is about the clearest picture I have seen. My concern is the transom counter. On the drawing, it shows the trailing edge of the counter has multiple angles. Everything I have seen suggests that the counter has the same angle as the transom and then curves around to the stern.

I don’t know enough about the Morgan to know whether her stern was altered at some point during her lifetime. However, those two photographs do not seem to match either the plan or the sketch in the instruction manual.

That's a very good point. She has gone through several restorations. Some of the drawings I have seen shows the transom coming down through the counter and then going at another angle to the stern.

I think they changed her around a bit in service too. There’s mention online about a ‘Hurricane House’ being fitted on the poop at some time but to be honest I don’t even know what that is, never mind when it was done.
 
Hello everyone,

I have gotten the filler blocks for the bow and stern installed and shaped. The transom frames are in and at the correct angle. The outer transom frames lean back to match the transom and they also lean in to match the angle of the hull. I have also gotten the waterways installed. It's not real clear as to the instillation of the waterways and the planksheer. I was looking at some other builds and saw some builders installed the waterways first and then the planksheer, while others did it just the opposite. It doesn't show it on the plans, but the the waterways are faired at about a 45deg to just above the height of the deck planks.

Just found this thread I have this kit and it is drawing dust in the shipyard. This makes me want to build it but….. I resist! I have several others started. But I will follow your build happily. Great work
