Colonial Schooner Hannah by Cap'n Rat Fink - 1/4" scale - semi scratch - Mario

Dear Mario
I must to say that it is simply a pleasure to read your blog, a precise work process that brings beautiful results!
I will use your blog to build the same model I am building, I am in the initial stages and your blog will help me a lot Thumbsup :) Thumbsup
I too have been deeply engrossed in the detailed procedures that you provided for your very small and well crafted work. Tools can do a lot but their output is only as good a the planning and dialing-in that the operator provides. Excellent . . . no OUTSTANDING!!!!! PT-2

When these small vessels were sailing, often they used to tow the boats behind the ship - with this way, they produced a lot of free space on the ship deck

Hi you all,
Wow thanks for all the likes and kind remarks. it's tough when funerals and get togethers after the fact are not allowed. But my 2 friends in Arizona were friends of my youth, when I met them through my best friend. The 2 were brother and sister lost to the corona. Then my best friends sister, my buddy and his sister and her husband, ah we were all great friends together in out youth. And finally put my sister in law to rest yesterday and it's tough when you can't give your brother a hug for his loss. We all will get through this weird time, but we must be patient and have a little faith.
But life goes on and must go on. Uwe you are right in many ways, but these ships placed the boats where ever they saw fit. I found my old mamoli Black Prince which after some research found out Benjamin Franklin's Black Prince was a Sloop not a schooner. So I rebuilt her and kit bashed her. My build log is on MSB.

And this is where I placed her boat at ;):cool:Uwe.

Gonna visit a bit more with my bro before he heads home up to Northern California. Then I will be back at this. I am still waiting for Dave Stevens to hopefully answer my emails on the Caustic. Haven't decided yet if i will be doing this build.
You all take care and be safe......!!!

Dear teleman
I was sorry to read about the loss and hardships you are experiencing in these difficult days. Accept the sincere condolences.
Indeed life needs to continue and building models is another desirable way to flow with life and face the challenges they pose to us.
I wish you would know no more sorrow

Hi Shota thanks for your very kind and nice words!!!

Blessings to you and yours,
Mario

Well I am back at it with my woodworking, modeling, and home projects. But figures i live in southern California in the Mojave Desert. Right it's heatwave after heatwave. As I type 106 degrees today and tomorrow to be hotter. Oh Boy. I have a garage shop at this time. My own personnel shop, well looks to be next year not now. So i have my indoor rigging station setup inside our home ready to go for the spider monkeys to start running lines. The spars and mast are ready for rigging. The bowsprit is ready to be placed and glued in and as with the spars. But I decided it's best to start construction of the display case. It's easier to take the model and test fit without all the masts, spars, and bowsprit in the way. Once I have the way I want all the good stuff will be placed and glued into their locations. I can either set the hull permanently on the display base the rig or keep on the vise as the rigging goes along.
I decided on melamine as the base with poplar for the framed edging around the melamine base.

1295.JPG

The 3 large strips will be for the framing of the melamine base. The one small strip you see will be milled down to be used to display the boat. I was going to use basswood, but since I had this strip left over I decided to put it to good use. The large poplar piece you see is the same of the piece I milled down for the base. Just thought i would show you it does take much to create the display base.
NOW I NEED IS A COUPLE BUNCHES OF BANANAS TO KEEP THE SPIDER MONKEYS AND THE RIGGING SHOULD GO VERY WELL!!!

NOW FOR A COLD BEER CAUSE IT'S DAMN HOT!!!

LATER EVERYONE

Hi All,
Well since I am ready to rig the Hannah. I needed to start building the base for the display case. But I also needed to cut a few pieces to length. I thought of putting this info in Jig n Things but I would have to put the manufactures name which I try not to do. So just thought to show you all the setup procedure I go through for the brynes sliding table.
All I can say is I am pretty sure I did it right. Because I bought it a while ago, but it had no instructions as to how to remove the rip fence properly and/or correctly. So here is a few pics for all my fellow modelers.

I forgot to mention for those you who do have this little jig, you might notice my jig and Table saw look a little different. It is because I have the extra large brynes table saw. That's the only difference.

There are a lot of small screws to remove and install with the accessories which would likely get lost with my fading memory of where I put things down. Olah's demonstration video illustrates this very well and even with a slow-motion video she is flying at the take downs and assemblies. It looks like a great tool with a lot of controls and flexibility. You will make good use of it. PT-2

Thanks PT,
Actually it doesn't take very long at all to do. But before this type of table was avaliable I made feather boards, and still use push sticks to work safer with the T.S.

Well i decided to make my base of course from melamine and framed in with poplar. The poplar framing will go on after I am done with the rigging. Turning the board here and there might indent the poplar. Even classified as hardwood it's pretty soft to me. I mounted the boat deciding on rigging her on the display board. I added the masts, bowsprit, and cleats, stop cleats here and there. I first glue the boat into place, which after I pinned with brass rod. underneath I used small one inch wood screws going into the keel for securing. After all I live in So. Calif......earthquake country. Haha!
I have a little touch up painting and wipe on poly stuff left to do and I will start with the gammoning first. You will notice I never attached the rudder opting to display in a different way. All the cannons will not go on the boat, again deciding to display in a different. As for the pea shooters on the caprails they will be mounted when I think they will no longer interfer with the rigging. Oh also you will notice the red painted area incomplete. I plan on adding figures to add a little life to the model. I hope it works out right for what I have planned. So here is a few pics where I am at. I will also get back to working on my bedford whaleboat while rigging the Hannah. So away we go!!!

In prior years when I raced dinghys of various classes we used a wind vane to top of the mast for the direction and to assist in sail positioning for best air flow and lift. Those clothes pins reminded me of that. LOL. Nice looking build that you are bringing forth. It will be a show piece. PT-2

See you all later. Plenty of more pictures to add. party On!!!

Hello Mario, Just catching up on your build log, I am very sorry to hear about your great loss of so many family and friends, You have had much more than your fair share of grief. We had a bit of that a year ago Dec. when we lost our son to cancer and that still hurts. Hang in there.
Regards Lawrence

I am sorry to hear of your wide-spread losses. Our family so far, is limited to two but in the same household so it is touchy: daughter and her daughter with one other sibling and father in the same house. Lucking their son is out of town as a college student. The stress and depression on remaining family members may only be tempered with mutual support and their own religious convictions/faith. Rich (PT-2)

Hi Lawrence nice of you to say that about my model.

HEY EVERYBODY,

As a reminder I am using other ships for a reference on rigging the Hannah. Rattlesnake, Halifax, and Sultana. I will be adding a lot of pictures, but with not much explanation. The reason is because it would get so complicated that I would end up writing a short story! LOL! So if there is any question(s) to the method of my madness just ask and I will be able to explain in more detail for you. Hahn had mentioned in his book that the plans rigging sheet would probably be the most accurate. But when you look at his model his is a bit different. So with that I decided to go in my own direction on rigging the Hannah, but using the ships and the Hahn plans has a guide to rigging her. What I mean my own direction is rigging the boat to the look I like the most.
I hope I did not make mistakes because I am not a expert on this rigging stuff, plus there is nothing I have been able find on the WWW for rigging the Hannah.

I used my exacto knife to mimic the fore mast. This is called a truss. It's used to help secure the lower yard to the mast.
