Does anyone know a resource for painting the cast figures of the Corel WASA model? The best things I have found are the build guides from de Agostini's version which is a larger scale and its fittings are not consistent with Corel's fittings. Corel's instruction sheet is no help as it does not mention the fittings.

Corel's kit is from back when it was presumed the figures were unpainted so I doubt if you'll find instructions. I think if you get the tones correct you could make a reasonable attempt at it though!

That said...here is an example of the Corel kit with painted figures...

For Dockattner: I am at the stage where I am starting to plank my WASA. The instructions are poor at best. The first 4 strips are "designed" to set the openings for the cannons. The material for creating the cannon openings is soft basswood (or equivalent) routed in the shape of a "C." This is way to fragile a type of wood for this application as it breaks aggravatingly easy when sawing off 20mm chunks for the openings. Did you use another material and if so what? Did yous start with a solid piece of stock and route/dado that stock to use in place of that terrible choice by the Corel company? I am very temped to buy a length of [ine, poplar or even maple to use in the step. It will be far sturdier than that piece of basswood. Any suggestions? There is also a designation of "TI" for a selection of wood but no indication in the instructions as to the type. I can only assume this is Tanganica as that is the material I have used for the first planking in 5 previous dbl plank on bulkhead kits.

I planked everything using the kit supplied wood and then cut in gun ports afterwards:

I then lined the gunports:

And then used pear veneer...

These comments and photos are VERY helpful. Thanks. I'll let you know how my efforts to mill those two pieces of "U" channel work out. I will probably use my router table to mill it than trying my table saw. I'm using poplar and it should be much sturdier when I cut out the individual gun port sections.

I like your base. What did you use as a template for the cradles? The drawing for the frames? I need to do that for the finished version of my HMS VICTORY as well as the WASA.

I'm finally restarting my VASA build. Its the Corel version. How did you determine where to mark the waterline? I haven't been able to find a reference for this.

Hi,
Paul is right re: water line - I built the Corel example - wish that I had not - it's the least accurate of any Vasa kits available -
had to bash the heck out of it to try to improve upon its accuracy --- still way off.... -Corel's hull is not even close to the real ship's dimensions.
Paul's @dockattner is THE best that I have seen here at SoS - his hull planking is also superlative work....

YES it's as very old kit!!!
Here are some images of my Corel results FYI: https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/corel-vasa-bashed.2541/

Regards,

To those of you who built the Corel version:
How did you work around the discrepancies between the dimensions listed in the multitude of plan sheets and the construction of the ship? For example, I wanted to make the cannon mounts for the hull out of poplar but found that the dimensions listed in the parts sheet were a bit larger that the channel stock provided. There are several others I am finding that will necessitate my having to go to other resources to get better dimensions for 1/72 scale. I have already had to rip off some of my first planking at the bow to adjust the length of what will become the sides. I have copies of plans from provided by the VASA museum as one possible reference. I'll also get a copy of VASA I.

I found this thread from six years ago started by Paul. - It won't fix your Corel issues - but regarding the Corel IMO build the hull "as is" then add as many other details that will add greatly to your build.

If you are vaguely interested my very complete step by step log is over at Model Ship World (md1400cs) that's where I bashed it as best that my abilities allowed exclusive of kit's way-off hull dimensions.

Thanks! I seem to be having trouble finding your log. Do I need to become a member of MSW to find it?

I am using the assembly guides from De Agostini as my reference.
Just checked you do not need to be a member - thanks for you interest -

Thanks!!

FYI...while Vasa I is a glorious achievement it will not be of any help building a model of the ship.
I respectfully disagree. The book contained drawings of each deck and I was able with the help of a local office supply comoanu tp produce copies in 1/72 scale with which I then marked each deck opening and the proper location of the foremast (forward of the location shown on the Corel plan sheet). The photos of the real ship were also helpful in providing ideas for additional corrections. I hope the second volume will be equally informative if I can ever get a copy through my local library.
