the WS engine was water cooled which brings up an interesting thought when these engines were used on salt water vessels was salt water used to cool them?

Last night I looked up the Kahlenberg engine In volume 2 of Stan Greyson’s books Engines Afloat. As a result of this, I believe there to be a strong possibility that White Swans cargo winch was powered by one of these engines.

For many years Kahlenberg’s major market was the Great Lakes fishing fleet. The lakes’ whitefish and Lake Trout were fished year round by fishermen in enclosed boats. Nets were used. Pulling these was heavy hard work especially in cold winter. Kahlenberg developed a machine that allowed the nets to be pulled from within the shelter of the boat. It was powered by a single cylinder Kahlenberg engine.

One of these single cylinder engines would also work for powering White Swan’s winch. The photo posted in post #64 above shows a vertical object behind the winch that could well be the engine’s cylinder.

you could be right Roger so what i need to do is get a high resolution of the picture in post #64 and ask the museum if they have pictures of winches

Do you think one of those ladies is pregnant? The gal on the right has a normal figure, but the one on the left has a kangaroo belly. In the 1930's women were not obese like today.

actually now that you pointed that out it sure looks that way. The lady was the daughter of the White Swan captain and if you really want to follow up you can research records and see if the captain had a grand kid.
