Endurance (- Occre 1:70) Build Log

Further details ...

Modification 22: Added bracing wires to the smoke stack. The historical images show the deck before dog kennels were built. Other images suggest the bracing wires pass over the kennels.

Modification 23: Handrail on the steps from the stern to upper deck

Modification 24: Added more details to the boats including grab lines, and oars (made from 1mm dowel and left overs from the decking timber). I drilled small holes into the side of the top of the boats and cut pins to size and glued into the holes before attaching the thread. I applied a dab of PVA to the bottom of the thread to shape it in a loop as rope would normally hang.

Modification 25: I produced an improved stand to replace the Occre provided one. Used the Occre stand as a template to mark and cut the hull curves and used 10mm dowel to connect the 2 ends. Finished off with black felt to hold the hull.

Question, On the rear davits the rear one appears lower than the front one. is there a reason for this. ??

That is because the stern appeared to raise slightly towards the rear so when I aligned the davits with the strake it did not look right so I was aiming to get the boat horizontal with the same length of rope from the davits to the boat.

I note you have changed the Hatch between the two inboard lifeboats. I like the change! But was the any specific reason rather than the actual photos. Do you have any drawing or is it just taken from the early photos

I was basing the change on the historic photo. I think the hatch that Occre have included was not in the position that they put it on the model, but may have been added when they later covered over the walkways which was done at a later stage. I have based it on the picture below. There are no plans; I just sized as what looked appropriate from the picture. It is possibly slightly wider and higher than in the picture but not stupidly so in my opinion.

Another question. the smoke stacks on the kit model. with the boat inboard, I cannot see them on the photo. Were they still there

If you are referring to the 2 smokestacks either side of the ship I don’t believe these existed… I have not seen evidence of them in any historical images unless someone else has knowledge to the contrary. The only place I have seen a smoke stack is on the port side of the bridge. If you look at Modification 21 you can see what I believe to be the smoke stack to the left of the officer.
