Fair American 1:48 by Model Expo

After soaking for a couple of hours, the planks easily bend to the proper shape. I can do two planks at a time on this. The bending iron will be needed to bend the planks around the bow, which I suspect will require some experimentation to get right.

Your edge bending set up is well done and a great example. You mentioned a bending iron for the broad bend but there is another way that gets the amount of bend exact. After you remove it from the forming jig and taper the breadth of the plank re-wet the wood at the bow end and then clamp it in place on the hull. Dry it with a hot air gun or even let it sit to dry if you don't mind waiting. Remove it then glue it in place. Just another way to skin the proverbial cat.

Thank you, Allen. That is essentially what I have done. I got the first plank on each side in place and will do the second run tomorrow after work.

In his practicum, Bob does one side at a time, but I prefer to alternate each ru. Personal choice. Bob also works from the top down, whereas in previous builds, I have gone bottom up. In this case, I see the advantage of working from bulwarks down to the wales, but after that I think I’ll go to the garboard strake. If anyone sees peril with that approach, walk me off the ledge.

I ordered a pair of Model Expo brass pedestals from Hobbylinc (because they are out of stock at ME) only to find that at some point ME changed how they do things (no surprise) and the two pedestals-height difference aside-look nothing like each other

So now I’m left with a choice whether to just go with what I’ve got or, alternatively, order a second pedestal in the same size and then figure out a way to raise or lower it 1/4” to achieve the proper deadrise.

Namabiiru! I feel your frustration! Here's what they look like on my Lovely Renee. I don't think you should be concerned - no one is going to notice! They'll be looking at your ship!View attachment 537578

Blessings.

That's fair (no pun intended), but I'll notice, and it will possibly drive me crazy. I suffer from CDO--it's like OCD, but in alphabetical order.

BTW, it looks in this photo like you have a glass base. Is that so? I love the rich bronze-like finish on your pedastals. Did you do anything special to achieve that?

Oh, I get it. I have my own version. Yesterday, I almost left the house without shaving.ROTF And if you believe that it will be a serious CDO problem, then you should spent the time thinning the aft pedestal ;). Myhope for you is that yougive the time and effort to the ship:D

Not glass - plexiglass. The admiral likes the modern look of the plex case with no wood. Happily, it suits my tastes as well.

Good morning Namabiiru,

I can understand you. It has to look absolutely perfect. That would always bother me too. I've already chosen a ship stand too. I wanted to put the Athena on four mermaid columns. I thought she was soooo beautiful . The figure is made of brass. What do you think? All the other ship stands are so boring ... Otherwise I'll build it myself.

The base of the stand is rounded off with a gold mirror. So you can even see the Athena from below. The display case will be made of cut 3 mm Perspex, which can withstand UV radiation and won't yellow. The base will be made from wood. The gold mirror will also be made of coated perspex.

Best regards, Günther Ship-1

I think that will look fabulous! You'll have to chose names for the mermaids with great care.
Yes, I do my friend!! I called this mermaid "Doris"; it is the name of my wife. :D

The female first name "Doris" comes from the ancient Greek tribe of the Dorians. "Doris" is also a short form of the name "Dorothea". "Doris" is derived from the Greek and means something like "gift of God" or "gift of God".

Cheers, Günther.Ship-1

Hopefully nobody will be offended if I depict her in a topless state, which is how she appears to me in her unpainted condition, not to mention it’s how sailors of the day would have wanted her depicted ROTF ROTF

Sailors of all the days!

Interesting log old pal. It’s not the model or the skills that make a good log but the writing up of the drama. I shall follow along, bobbing in your wake.

Inspired and humbled to have you aboard!

I’m afraid my prose is too much lacking to attract much attention to my logs, but I’ve recently discovered photos of scantily clad figureheads to be quite efficacious. Oh, for a muse of fire…

Hey Namabiiru! Just discovered your Fair American log. I love your entertaining dialog on the figurehead. I'm happy to follow along for the rest of the build.
Thanks for climbing aboard, Daniel. I fear the figurehead discussion will prove to be the high water mark of the discussion. Or low water, depending on your sense of sensibility…

I can relate to that; stressing over details no one else will even notice. But at the end of the day, I think it's about what will leave you feeling the most satisfied. If an error or imperfection keeps you up at night, even if its invisible to the rest of the world, then I'd say fix it so you can sleep soundly.
