"Flying Cloud " by Mamoli - kit bash

In response to Pauls' question.
WHAT was I thinking!
Along those lines. Simulating jackstays. Fine brass rod with split rings to simulate the eyebolt heads. The whole thing glued in place with much colorful language and thinning of hair. This is a second bench dedicated to spar fabrication.:eek:View attachment 541515View attachment 541516View attachment 541517View attachment 541518View attachment 541519
Size does matter! Nice detailed work, Pete.:)
Regards, Peter

Finished fitting out main spar. Now the nearly identical fore and mizzen lower spars await my nimble fingers and endless patience. (Wish I could just snap my fingers and Voila! :p )
Back to reality.Cautious I've included lots of process pictures mostly without comment. I think it's mostly self-explanatory. Lots of steps to get to "finished"
One set of plans shows sheeves for chain inside the spars, others show exterior blocks. I decided to go with exterior blocks because of the fussiness and fragility involved in fitting sheeves into slots in the spar. Since I had a choice, I went with the "better part of valor" I know it can be done even at small scale, but I've had the joy of having to go back and repair massive amounts of labor when the fragile end of a mast or spar went "snap!" just as I thought I was rounding the last bend to the finish line .20250902_140328.jpg20250902_140950.jpg20250902_141652.jpg20250902_155319.jpg20250902_162936.jpg20250902_162936.jpg20250902_160734.jpg20250903_132609 (3).jpg20250902_163128.jpg20250902_163822.jpg20250902_172411 (2).jpg20250903_153437.jpg20250903_153816.jpg

Some process on fitting out main tops'l yard:
Waste not want not: the dowel handles for hospital swabs make nice dowels for stuns'l yards. The old hard steel drill gauge makes a nice draw pate.
Black construction paper for iron bands.
Brass jackstay bolts for stuns'l irons.
#70-71 drill bits in a pin vise.

I've collected about a half dozen of these old drafting sets on E-bay. The one shown was about thirty bucks. I still use my dads' old K&E set from the 1930s.
Cheap, beautiful and useful. Very high quality available.
I figure I'll gift some to fellow obsessives.

Thanks, Doc.
There's a LOT to making and fitting out spars!
The "iron" spar truss is available in a few sizes from BlueJacket Shipcrafters. Two suitable for 1:96 scale.

I have several of those kits myself. Very useful tools...in many ways. I use them every day on my builds.

Thanks, Doc.

Indeed you are correct Peter. I use the same trusses....some of the best available, if you are not making your own.
I like your progress. There is so much to a spar, it is a project in of itself.
One trick, I have adopted for myself, is the addition of tightly furled sails. They generally sit atop the yard, and are becketed in place very securely. Rigging the yards in this manner, mimics the proper stowage of the sails...but the best result is, you can forgo the tedious work of adding the jackstays. Yep...they are generally fully covered by the weathertight furled sails atop of them.

Thanks, Rob. I hear ya. If I was sure at this point that I'm going to include furled sails I wouldn't spend the time on the Jaclkstays. But I'm not sure yet.
I like the BlueJacket trusses, but they sure are fussy to attach! (Like everything else on this project!)
