contempotary source for the three or four under knee question still being unanswered...

I figured out that there is nothing to nee no upper nor lower knees - even in this very moment before the masts will be errected.

Sorry for not being able to help. After all Inread about Art History and baroque Kind of live style I would stay with four knees. Why? Due to the more symetrical and due to this much more pleasing look - as typical in my point of view for any baroque "feature" we have to deal with. But it is against the naval Penny Picking I do also know. So the problem stays unsolved. As so often it IS the artist's pleasure of choice and burden of responcibility to decide what to do.
