What are the reasons, why you want to change the given informations from the plans?
The forces against these knees are relatively small, so I think, that the three knees ware ok....
I am in sync with Uwe. Why would you change from the plan? Also, if you would change to the 'green' marks, some shrouds will be in the way of the upper gun ports.

Hello Christian, as I thought I could possibly help you with a
contempotary source for the three or four under knee question still being unanswered...
I figured out that there is nothing to nee no upper nor lower knees - even in this very moment before the masts will be errected.
Sorry for not being able to help. After all Inread about Art History and baroque Kind of live style I would stay with four knees. Why? Due to the more symetrical and due to this much more pleasing look - as typical in my point of view for any baroque "feature" we have to deal with. But it is against the naval Penny Picking I do also know. So the problem stays unsolved. As so often it IS the artist's pleasure of choice and burden of responcibility to decide what to do.
You do very well with your SAINT PHILIPPE thanks a lot for the inspiration you do to me, as I come out of my tunnel of depression I will restart...
