Gold Version of the Black Pearl - My First Build

Build Time = 30 hours

Worked a number of hours on the planking. Using both wood Glue and super glue depending on the plank or the curve. Going pretty smoothly. Decided to make a black line with the sharpie on the ship by the edge of the board to try to cover up the gaps.

I am planking and planking and planking……
Getting some great experience planking with the walnut. Way easier to bend but splinters very easily. Hard to trim around edges or anything because the wood splinters apart. Trims much better if it is glued down well.

Forgive my unorthodox building style. I get tired of planking and move on to other tasks. I planked in my upper stern area and concealed the lamp wires. Kinda did my own thing. Also formed and installed the arch piece over the captains quarters.

Looking great Larry! Appreciate the tips on walnut and how it splinters....

Fantastic progress looking good you'll catch up to me soon. Good job
I doubt it. if you know anything about rigging at all you will be way ahead of me. I have depended on my Eagle Scout son to tie all my knots in life, so I will have to learn all of them. Out of all the tasks, rigging worries me the most.

That's my problem, rigging was always going to be the hardest part and the instructions are very confusing I have a bit of homework to do.

I have seen some builds where the all the first planking has been stained/painted in a dark colour but I didn't do that with mine. The problem with the walnut being dark even the smallest gap can be seen. The sawdust and PVA seems to work well.

So I took the advice given. I did it like this. Find the offending gap or seam. Dab some glue in the spot.

After wiping the excess glue, sand the area. This forces sawdust into the glue and does a great job covering the seams.

Total build time = 62 Hours

Took a break from the Port side planking and did a bit of rail work.

That’s the tightest curve and it went okay, a bit of splintering but I should be able to sand it smooth before glue up. Took two different soakings with hot water.

I didn’t like the way the rail looked with only 9 pickets. I added an extra one to make it an even ten. Looks better that way and it appears there a few extra in the kit.

Port side planking is almost done. Going pretty smoothly.

A little planking detail.

Well, just opened the box tonight and inventoried everything, all seems to be in order. Removed the keel pieces and filed the edge profile on the first piece. I will try to keep track of build time in the log. I expect to be rather slow and cautious as this is my first ship build ever. I will also have tons of questions as the directions are not so great.

Build Time So Far = 30 Minutes

Hallo Larry alias @lmcneil1406
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Birthday-Cake

Your planking looks so good and the natural color of the wood is so beautiful ... must you stain it black? How about a Brown Pearl?
