Hey Grant, the cannon carriage looks good. I would probably make your own eyes if you have small diameter wire.

Good morning Dean. Thanks. I really like them. You guys have convinced me to make my own eyes. The photo does accentuate the oversized eyes but now that’s all I see. I was hoping to avoid that process. I have wire 0.4,0.5 and 0.6mm. 0.5mm will probably best best for scale. (I don’t know what it’s made off) however it changes to a realistic colour over time. Ahh I really don’t like making those little eyesHey Grant, the cannon carriage looks good. I would probably make your own eyes if you have small diameter wire.![]()
On the Dutch forum there was someone that lived in South Afrika and told often about that. Packages never arrived.True story.
The stained ones might help them stand out on the deck more - the unstained ones sort of blend in??? I don't know else is going to happen up there.
I vote for stained. I think it will increase their visibility.
Good morning. Thanks guys. I am also leaning towards the stain. Paul has a good point though. There are plenty of walnut stanchions/reinforcements on the bulkwarks by the gun and oar port as well as waterways. It gets nice and busy. If I leave them natural the poly on the carriages will also deepen and slightly darker them. I think I will just make all of them and decide later. Thanks for your support and compliments.Hi Grant, compliments on de carriages, go for the oak stain. They look stunning and better than the ones I made.![]()
Stained, for sure, maybe even a little brighter...
Have to agree with everyone else... stained!![]()
I would finish them with Tung oil, or.., I would make a similar color as your inside bulwarks.
.... and yes, the stained carriage is certainly my preference as well![]()
Thanks Mark. You know the story. I have checked out the online store of this shop. The big problem is the detail parts like small 0.15 and 0.2 eyes and hooks etc. I guess I just go to make a whole load. Cheers GrantGreat work with your planking and cannon work Grant! Commiserate with the postage and corruption issues in SA with which I too am most familiar. On my visit to KwaZulu last year I found quite an impressive hobby shop called Denkit Hobbies in Shelley Beach. They used to have a storefront in the Shelley Centre but have since re-located their operations to their own backyard in Uvongo, possibly for some of the same reasons mentioned earlier including the power breaks. I was mildly surprised by the stock they carry which included a fair number of ship kits as well as tools and other consumables, although it falls well short of the variety and quality of modelling goods you get overseas. And yes, sadly, mailing anything to or receiving any postage from South Africa is pure hit and miss, not guaranteed at all, or can take many, many months to happen. I totally understand the challenges you face and well done indeed on your progress and the level of creativity that inevitably surfaces under those conditions![]()

Good afternoon Peter. True story. I am have resigned myself to make hooks and eyes to get the scale right. It is when we look back and it looks so much better that we feel that satisfaction….”.I like it”. So I am telling myselfIt's a time consuming thing this hobby is.....I just got flashbacks of the hours and hours of work of making all the eyes, bolts, hooks for this ship.
Well, with the right mindset and perseverance you'll get it done!![]()
Good morning. Thanks for this. One of my clients is a dental supplier so I will go and visit him next week. Cheers GrantHi Grant
I don't know what you use for making eyelets ,but for me anatomical tweezers seem to be very helpful. You can get in in shop with dentist accessories. It's important to have grooves inside.
