Hmm. All I need is a resin printer and downloaded files? I just figured out how to use a mill - will the learning never end!

It looks good to me cheated or not. Not to be rude, but the whole model is a little bit cheating, spanish xebec into french one?Good morning.
Cheating time:
I know I cannot whittle wood as those magicians Peter (@Ptèr ), Dean (@Dean62 ) , Maarten (@Maarten ) and many others do. The kit decorations do not fit my Xebec in any manner so I cheated and bought a resin 3D printer. Lol it was cheaper than the three 3D Parts I bought for my Victory….go figure.
To design correct and accurate designs one needs to buy a CAD program and go to university. For Grants Xebec Im just going to download some free STL files and create some decorations. I will have “go to University” before my next ship which hopefully will be a historical replica. I have missed the research and discovery aspect of this hobby with this build.
My theme - Lion and eagle. After splicing (Using Lychee splicer ) this is what came out.
All stuck on with Prestick and painted with antique brass. Sorry Dean @Dean62 and Paul @dockattner ,no artistic dry brushing and fancy work- just dip and paint.

Modelling- I framed the stern with walnut, and the underneath with Sapele veneer. I have basically run out of 1mm walnut left overs from the Victory so no redos available- Eish!

Problem….The emblem, only free STL I can find, of a lion and an eagle which shape works, is the Armenian emblem….what a landlocked country has to do with a Corsair Xebec who knows. Ah well let’s see- was fun.
Cheers Grant

Been there, done that, and I think I still have the tee shirt.Good morning:
Blunder: While fettling I was cleaning and sizing the main and Mizzen mast deck holes. The masts didn’t fit.. Short story when building the frame I switch the masts support bases - the Mizzen is at the main mast etc. A total clown moment
. Result- main mast doesn’t fit and Mizzen wobbles all over the place.

….n Boer maak n plan…as we say in SA. Basically means we improvise to solve a problem. Project for another time.
Cheers Grant
Thanks Peter. I prefer wood carvings however I do have to build within my skill level. I admire you guys who have this ability.A 3d printer is really helpfull for carvings. The lion statues are really nice. Well done Grant!![]()
Thanks Maarten. I have been checking out design and sculpting in 3D programs. This is not easy and is something I will get into. Obviously a really good 3D Cad software app is the first buy.Hi Grant, your 3D printed parts look great. BTW if you start sculpting in 3D programs you are still sculpting. Enjoy it, it will be lots of fun.
Good morning Vladimir. I know very little about the History of Central Asian countries. This is good to know as if I cannot find a suitable replacement I am going to leave this emblem on my ship. Cheers GrantIn fact, there were many Armenian merchants in Europe since the Middle Ages, especially in Italy and France.
Good Morning Daniel. With my carving skills and not being able to use the kit decorations I had very little choice. I’m looking forward to getting a decent cad program- who knows I may be able to design and print awesome accurate cannons one day. It’s a hobby all on its own and is really interesting.Grant, now you have me thinking about buying a 3D printer.
Good morning Ken. Happy birthday for the other day. I missed it. Thank you. She is turning out better than I expected when I decided to “just do my own thing”.Getting caught up Grant. Really like the cleaness of your build to date. Also, the warmth of the Sapele on your hull. is appealing to me Very natural finish.
Good morning Johan. “Half cooked”….I don’t get past the pencil design stageGrant, personally I'd rather see these good looking 3D-printed ornaments, than half-cooked efforts with woodworking, no offense intended to anyone on this forum. That just wouldn't do justice to this beautiful example of a Xebec.
Just thinking; wouldn't you be able to create spectacular wooden "carvings" with a small 5-axis CNC-machining tool?I prefer wood carvings however I do have to build within my skill level.
Good morning Paul. With your skill set I believe you can out do any 3D printer. I do prefer the look of natural wood carved decorations especially in fine wood. On the other hand 3D printing once you start the design stage looks so interesting. All parts and fittings supplied in the kit can be redesigned to be 100% accurate with absolute detail. Nope learning never ends. Would be boring if it didHmm. All I need is a resin printer and downloaded files? I just figured out how to use a mill - will the learning never end!
Good morning. True story. Bought a Spanish kit, wanted a little Arabic, turning out a little French. It has been super fun doing my own thing though. A Xebec it will always be ….hopefullyIt looks good to me cheated or not. Not to be rude, but the whole model is a little bit cheating, spanish xebec into french one?So couple of 3d ornaments can only be in "+" for your project
Cheers
Thanks. I will check these out. Sculpting on 3D apps is still a way off for me. Cheers GrantHello Grant,
regarding the software required for modeling, there are some free to use tools you can try before purchasing anything. For CAD/CAM Autodesk Fusion 360 is free for private use. For sculpting Ibwould recommend having a look at Blender, it’s also free. But whether the tool is free or not, modeling organic shapes requires a lot of practice
@RDN1954 I have been looking for a 5 axis desktop CNC, but the entry level was at about 5000€…
Hi Johan. I’m sure one could. I think the price of these is “ouch”. Cheers GrantJust thinking; wouldn't you be able to create spectacular wooden "carvings" with a small 5-axis CNC-machining tool?
@shota70: any experience with that?
You handle those chisels and knifes like a pro, don't go to an amateur level with a milling machine or table saw.....Man…I feel like I’m working in the stone ages these days!
Everyone is getting milling machines, table saws, rope making machines, etc. like they’re running ship building factories in the 20th century and I’m working with xacto knives and chisels. But I have made CAD models I printed, so there’s still some hope for me!![]()
You know I like you better all the time! You handle those chisels and knifes like a pro, don't go to an amateur level with a milling machine or table saw.....![]()

Good morning Peter. I have seen guys do amazing things with the Cat/Cam software. I think Nigel bought some 3D canons for his current build and they were so good. It does take some learning and skill to work that software and will be a project for another time. In mean time I’m just doing a simple slicing with some free STL file. My print still failed with some itemsIf you are a good painter, a 3d printer is a very nice addition to the hobby! You can print almost anything if you can work with the 3d CAT / CAM software.
Good morning Dean. With your skills you don’t need any help from the 20th Century.Man…I feel like I’m working in the stone ages these days!
